Just listened to Dave talk about this in his audiobook, The Storyteller. The band had to figure out a cover song for the BBC which needed to be doable in a short space of time when they returned home. Like half an hour before this show they were messing about in the warm up room jamming ideas and Dave noticed Rick Astley was on the lineup. So they tried Never Gonna Give You Up. Realised it perfectly merged with Smells Like Teen Spirit and found it so funny they played it over and over. Whilst they were playing the gig, Dave noticed Rick rocking out side stage watching the band. During a keyboard solo, he walked over to Rick and shouted "we just learned Never Gonna Give You Up half an hour ago, wanna do it with us?" to which Rick replied "FUCK YES". Then this happened.

Rick Suarez Not only that, but I’m pretty sure they got the idea from a mashup of these two songs that’s been on YT for years now. In part because it’s such a random and batshit insane combo that I can’t think of how else they thought of doing it, and in part also because the mashup in question suddenly started showing up in “related” and “recommended” vids for many KZbin users since this concert was aired (despite being almost a decade old at the time - something a lot of people have expressed puzzlement about over in that vid’s comments).

Just listened to a Dave Grohl interview, and the band decided to learn the song when they saw Rick Astley was at the show. In breaking it down, they realized it has exactly the same arrangement as SLTS: Intro, drum break, verse, re-intro, riff... It was the same, so they just adapted the SLTS instrumentation to Never Gonna Give You Up. During the Foos concert, Dave saw that Astley was off-stage and during a break, asked him if he wanted to perform the song.

@@enjoi62137it does, vocal cord is the only muscle in the human body that wears off with use, especially intense use and an exaggerated one on top of that. singers/vocalists are trained to not strain their voice is exactly for this reason, and it's also the reason why a lot of rock and metal band loses intensity in their voice as they grow old. granted all other muscles also wear off as people grow old, but they can be trained to be stronger even when you're old, with vocal cord you can't.
