Alaska bear encounter while hiking and bear in camp at night. We are in the snow with the old 96er, the 1996 Ford f250 4x4 camper conversion or as some call them caravan conversion. We make lunch and a campfire out on the trail on a beautiful cold day. Sitting around the crackling fire we talk about some of our Bear encounters in Alaska and here in Oregon. Fun time in camp.

What a splendid family heirloom! Bears are always a cause for excitement! We've never had a 'bad' bear encounter and actually see more of them at home than we do anywhere else. Our dogs tend to keep most animals away from camp. Yes, being bear aware is the best practise.

Love the axe. Reminds me of what my Dad told me once while handing me one of similar size. He said, "Take good care of this axe. It's been in the family for 4 generations. I said, wow that's old. 4 generations, really? He said yeah, we've replaced the handle about 6 times and swapped out the head 3 different times." It was at that point I realized that no part of the axe had been around for 4 generations. Family has a way of reeling you in on a story only to find out you've been playfully HAD again. Good stuff and thanks for sharing this camping trip with us all.

Love the 96r. I had a similar truck that was a 97. Single cab, but the footprint was the same: strictly utilitarian - no flash, tall skinnies. I miss it, but the 460 wouldn't pass a gas station and that limited my travel. 10 -11mpg doesn't go far. Fantastic truck though. Nice country there. I'm in Washington, and bears are common, too. My favorite spot is along the primitive side of Baker Lake. Had a late September visitor at 2am that was not at all respectful of me or my tent. It ended well when he decided to slowly walk off in that "cowboy" John Wayne swagger. I did not go back to sleep.

I have a bear encounter for you. I was Girl Scout camping with my troop in the Pocono mountains in 1979. We were staying at a campground where people could buy little plots of land put their camper there permanently. The site was big enough for 12 girls, and four adults our tents were facing into the center of camp with the back of the tents to the woods. We were all in bed. I was laying there trying to get comfortable. When it sounded like, how would you describe it very large person coming through the woods towards my tent, and the bear stopped at my tent and was literally pushing his nose against my head through the fabric. Nobody told me what to do. If a bear does that so I laid perfectly still and the second time it pushed the tent did the touch my head. I let out a scream that brought way too many people directly to me. But he did scare the bear away. Ha ha ha So, after that happened, I stopped using the shampoo I had brought with me and use the unscented shampoo the Counselor brought with her. Note, I had used the same shampoo, same fragrance for the previous two years, and no bear bothered me while at camp. We told the Rangers about the bear the next morning they set up a trap and caught the bear the next morning. I was told they moved the bear 10 minute drive deeper into the forest that we were camping in. After that we didn’t have any more bear trouble for that season we stayed there. That is my most exciting bear story I have. I really enjoy your videos. I hope the new year is wonderful for you and your family. Kathy.
