Once I heard following from an Orthodox brother: "During the fast we eat to live, outside of the fast we live to eat." :)))

I'm an Orthodox inquirer who just started keeping the fast today so this video is really appreciated, there are surprisingly few resources on Wednesday Friday fasting recipes. Cooking without oil is really tough!

I'm glad to hear that! As time goes by I'll have a lot more recipes to help with the cooking part. The Nativity fast is coming up so I'll have more opportunities to offer some strict fasting recipes.

As a newly minted Catechumen - thank you! I definitely have a lot to learn. Great to find a channel specifically dedicated to the faith and fasting meals! Very simple and cozy presentation.

@@CommIncenseCulture Just what you pointed out about some saints who lived to old age without declining into senility despite an extremely ascetic lifestyle. I was about to go to bed last night because head cold and tired and what you said motivated me to not skip my evening prayers. It makes sense that the Creator of all things continues to be the source of all energy. I had not thought of that in such a practical, real way (still a catechumen).

great vid! im Orthodox, trying to follow fasts kind of. but what i find very interesting, religious or not, fasts actually came from natural order of nature. in the sence what was available to eat and what was not. this orders were later included into religion. so even if people are not religious, for them these diets also make same sense..

Thank you, TheTripstraps! I appreciate the encouragement. Interestingly enough, I'm actually most compelled by the opposite. For example, vegetation is much less abundant in the Winter and it makes more sense to eat meat and meat products because they are more available. However, the two longest fasts (Nativity & Great Lent) are during this time. You would have to give your cows milk to the pigs which is great for fattening them up but right when you can have meat again (at Pascha) all the vegetables are growing back. It takes a great deal of faith to trust God during those times, especially before refrigeration and cross-global commerce. I would also say that fasting has always been a part of every religion throughout time. It's hard to say that it was a course of nature before it was a part of worship because we don't have any documentation of a time when there wasn't religion and act of worship and asceticism. Thanks for starting an interesting discussion, I wish you a blessed fast and a glorious upcoming Pascha!

Great video and very accessible to a catechumen, especially. I wonder about what we call "Wednesday" and "Friday", i.e are they considered to begin on sundown the previous day?

Maybe in other cultures but I've only heard it defined from midnight to midnight.
