@TaraandSky learn and know the traditions of our Catholic faith. What Holasona is showing is not different than what we also do or should be doing. I recommend you try attending a Latin Mass if you haven’t already. My home is stockpiled with all the Sacramentals that’s on this video and more. Do you have holy water font by your front door and bless yourself as you leave, for example. Good Friday oil another example. Every morning I wake up before my family, light a candle and bless EVERY room (while they are sleeping) making a sign of the cross with my candle, starting from my front door asking for blessings upon my family and protection. Ave Maria 🕊 Pax Christi 🕊✝️✝️

Lovely explanations! My family are converts from Protestant to Orthodox. I have been Orthodox 30 years now. My daughter has 10 children (7 adopted) and her home has a central family prayer ‘corner’. The children have created their own prayer space in their rooms. My son-in-law built a chapel in the back yard for my daughter to retreat to for quiet prayer. It is lovely. I have a few friends that have the hours on their cellphones. The bells ring on the hour and the reading shows up (conveniently). Audiobook format would work (I have a reading disability and can only do audiobooks). If you read Russian, look for my daughter’s book The Ascetic Lives of Mothers by Annalisa Boyd (a prayer book) published by Ancient Faith Publishing but published in Russia and released in other languages.

I’m a catholic mom of a nine year old son. We pray before mealtime, we do have some crucifixes in our home and some icons (my husband loves them a lot). We are all active in our church, my son is an altar boy, I am a psalmist (singing from the psalms after each reading of the Old Testament) and my husband is the one preparing church for services and cleaning everything up after masses. My son has a little basin for holy water in his room. (Dried up, thanks for the reminder!) We don’t have as many traditions regarding bread, salt and things that connect the divine to daily life. I love that in your home with the blessed salt. I would love that very much. Again, all the best to you kids, may they be healthy very soon again!

hi there! love from Ethiopia .since we are in the same church I can see the resemblance for example here the church fathers come and bless hour home too but they only use water and sometimes holy incense (but only the church father put the incense I don't know how they allow you to do this your self there b/c this is a religion practices with a meaning so that is why only the church father offer the incense to god just like the old days) other resemblance is the prayer corner of course it's preferred to have a prayer room if they have one but if not the prayer corner will do fine. and the other thing is the book you mentioned the prayer book is the other resemblance I see. Any how I am very happy you post this and looking forward to see what other common religious practice we have .may god be with you and your family and don't forget to put Ethiopia in your next visiting list believe me you won't regrate it and you will have a chance to see what you only read in book with you own eye

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing! It is great to know that our traditions are so alike! Regarding the incense burning, in Armenian church and in Eastern Orthodox churches it is a common practice for the faithful to burn incense at home. It is considered, that incense not only carries our prayers to God, but it also cleanses and purifies our homes. Ethiopia is definitely on my travel list! I have an Ethiopian church near me and I frequently go there to pray. I admire your tradition of taking off shoes before entering the church. I also love how beautiful parishioners look in their special church attire, women wearing long white veils. And the church itself is very unique! I would love to see some old Ethiopian churches!

It's not a matter of being proud. Catholicism is a beautiful faith. But through my studies I have found I prefer the older Catholicism. The pre-Vatican II Catholicism. And the more I learn, the further back I hope to go. Orthodoxy, from what I understand, practices now very much like it was practiced before the schism. I won't apologize for seeking to draw closer to Christ and faith.

I never heard of blessing of salt before or the bread, water and salt for the home blessing. I have not been taught how to make the Presphora. I love the idea of keeping it in the four. Thank you for sharing this!

My maternal grandfather is from Orthodox Church (Kerala). My paternal grandfather is from Church of North India/CNI the earlier Anglican Church. So many memories, learning’s & habits that I have developed over years including my own experience & relationship with the Lord. No matter what our denomination, country, culture….we need to keep our focus on Christ, He is our shepherd and we are His sheep.

Thank you for your very comprehensive explanation of practices of an orthodox family. I'm Greek Orthodox and I feel ashamed of myself for falling short in keeping to these things. The children's books are excellent rather than the secular books I had for my children. God be with you. You are raising faithful children. Hopefully you will inspire many Orthodox mothers . Hello Vicky! Thank you for your kind words! And thank you for sharing! There are seasons in life when it's so hard to keep up with all the traditions. Especially when no one around is practicing them. But, gradually, as we recover, we can bring these traditions back to our homes. Sending you my best wishes!

As a traditional Roman Catholic I can relate to your practices of Holy Water, Blessed Salt for both cooking and blessing, Incense, Blessing of the Home, and prayer room/corner. It is not common for us to have the Priest bless our home as frequently as you mentioned, at least not that I am aware of. I love your library- Great selections! I need to get some Church Father prayers/ readings. As a Carmelite who honors Prophet Elijah and knows him as a Spiritual Father, I was happy for you to be inspired by him! O-And your children's collection was adorable - Loved😘 'Kisses for Jesus'! I think I want that for myself🥰 SO sweet! One thing that I was surprised - is that you dont have more candles - As Roman Catholics, we use tons of candles, esp for praying. ..SO many that I have soot on my wall , 😅 And yes, we use Liturgy of the Hours too. Although, as a non-clergy, we dont have prayers for every hour.. Majority of catholics who pray the Liturgy of the Hours usually pray a morning, afternoon and/or evening, and then a compline/night. You mentioned 'name day' - I would like to hear more about it. I am familiar with the concept but as Roman Catholic we typically celebrate our baptismal name on the Feast day of the Saint that we are named after and do not have a specified 'name day'. Thanks !

Thank you so much! And thank you for sharing! It was really interesting to read about similar practices in Catholicism! I will work on the name day addition.
@eddiedelisio5 ай бұрын
Why so many similarities? Because we were one Church until Papal and filioque heresy which later caused more splintering as Protestants fled from the ensuing tyranny?

I was raised in a Catholic family, and in Mom & Dad's bedroom there was a crucifix on the wall. If you took it down and pushed sideways it opened up to reveal a tiny bottle of holy water and 2 small candles. If someone was dying in the house and the priest came to give Extreme Unction, you were supposed to greet him at the door with a lighted candle because he was carrying the blessed sacrament. And in my bedroom was my home-made shrine to Our Lady, often with flowers I had put in front of it. We had TWO Catholic stores in town where you could buy everything that was Catholic. The memories! 😊

You are such a lovely person and thank you so very much for all of your information . It was very kind of you to invite us all in to your home and share your traditions. I think they are beautiful. I appreciate and feel the significance of them all. Being raised Catholic I find a connection with the traditions of Mass and the Holy Eucharist and everything that our church practices. And I fully agree about introducing your family and children into all of them as they grow and mature. The significance and importance. God Bless you and your family.
