Excellent piece of work, as a food illustrator myself ( and former chef ) and having used arches hot press a time or two the paper is pretty resilient just don’t erase on it erasing will damage the surface of the paper and even remove some of the sizing. You did a beautiful job! You might try rough paper sometime it’s fun to work on and is definitely best for looser work because of the texture and when used with moderate to heavily granulating pigments the end results are absolutely beautiful ( I used Saunders Waterford myself as well as Arches on occasion ) Saunders is an excellent paper and is available overseas, I used to get it in Japan for a very good price it’s available from Jackson’s on line and they deliver everywhere and with free shipping if you spend $50 or more, also buying in full sheets is way more economical. Thanks for upload! Excellent work.

Ah that's so awesome! I have a home bakery and I accept online orders. But it's not something that's serious or anything, mostly custom decorated cakes and things :) The erasing thing is so interesting! I actually did try to draw at first on the paper, and then I opt to draw on a separate piece of paper and thn tracing it. I tjust didn't feel right for some reason. So that's probably why the paper felt a bit sensitive! I've never heard of Waterford before... Is it as good as arches? Thank you so much for your detailed comment as always :) I really appreciate the info! That could really be it. The erasing.. Maybe I'll try again on paper that I haven't erased on next time ^_^

@@Nianiani Yes, Saunders Waterford is in my opinion the best paper available (for me anyway) and in most places it is cheaper than Arches and is considered by most to be the second most popular paper available by profession artist. I also wanted to say that with both Arches and Saunders Waterford are 2 sided so you can paint on both sides if your using a cold press paper the opposite side which is smooth like hot press you have the advantage of having both types of paper to work on, if you use rough you have cold press on the opposite side...it's one of the reasons I use rough. Baking is a wonderful skill to have good for you. I have been working on my own KZbin channel for the past few weeks which focuses on food, illustration and learning to draw, paint and in traditional Media. Happy painting 😊.

@@tmp0922 I haven't actually tried painting on the other side of the cold pressed paper, sounds like something I should try out. I also noticed two sides to the hot pressed.. and now I'm also curious about that xD Starting your own youtube channel sounds awesome! Let me know when you have videos up :D

Wow. I love the detail on the cilantro, roe, leaves....everything. You do make it look so easy. Its beautiful and its making me hungry, especially after your description of the dish. I am so excited that the Arches worked well for you and that you had no streaking with the paint. You layered beautifully, as usual, and I enjoyed hearing you say the paint is more vibrant. Bonus that it also required less work, but on the other hand you had to be more precise. :) I think theres a learning curve with any type of paper. They all respond so differently. Cotton is more more sturdy than cellulose, added sizing and how they add it makes a big difference, and the type of press will all affect your painting experience. Watercolor paper is so pricey that its very hard to try them all out. I already had the Hot Press and rarely use it, but I thought it was closer to your needs and style of painting. Good catch by Antony on the erasing, because it does cause pilling of the paper. I could see where it happened in your painting, but you got thru it with ease. I have always wanted to try the Saunders as well but its pretty price in the US. Ive heard nothing but good things about it. **Anyway, this was one easy way I could thank you for all you do for us. You are sharing your talent with us and I had plenty to spare. I wanted to return some inspiration. I know how hard and pricey it is to get quality materials to your island.** Thank you again for another lovely tutorial. Happy painting Nia :DDD

Hey Tracy! Yea I love the paper so much! I also want to try painting on both sides too and see what happens. Its weird coz I usually erase on my cellulose and its fine. But once it's damaged, its hard to control anything, whereas this one just bleeds out a bit, but nothing too crazy. It does take a while to get used to, but definitely much easier to get used to. Guess theres always quality in price 😝 Thank you again for the art supplies, Tracy! ❤❤❤

@@OneTrueWord1988 Ive purchased from Jacksons once in the past. I"ll have to look over their paper a bit more. Thanks for the tip. I was able to try out samples of Fabriano Artistico from one of the US online art stores. Italian being more pricey for its distance from the US. I was so happy to test on 2 small sheets rather than buy a whole pad. I think it was a mere US 3$ and it allowed me to make an informed decision to buy more of this quality paper.

@@Nianiani yes its pricier, but I did wait until I found a good bargain on it. I was soooo hoping it would fit your needs and Im very happy it does. I too used my lesser quality paper to start my learning process, but had heard why not start out with quality paper. It really makes a difference so I try to use my better paper even for swatching. The difference is amazing. Nia, you are so very welcome. Thank you for all that you do. It was my pleasure.

@@TracyIndy I'm still going to use lesser quality stuff too, I don't mind spending the time (especially when I have a lot stocked in my drawer haha). I really don't want to waste the paper you gave me. Thinking of turning it into a sketchbook so I can paint on both sides, but on the other hand I don't want to ruin it haha xD what conflicting thoughts

Nia. I'm new to W/C as well. The % of cotton versus pulp is also key to a great (personal) experience. I've been using 100% cotton paper for a while after "learning" on student grade (pulp) paper. I'm in US so it's readily available to me. Wish I could send you some!

Actually just the opposite. Cotton does not breakdown with water. It HOLDS water. Cellulose breaks down. Hot pressed (or "not" in some communities) 100% cotton rag I recommend to you because of your many layers. I promise it will be a game changer. Again, I'm a newbie too. But I've abandoned paper in favor of Cotton.
@Nianiani5 жыл бұрын
@@sallyspires oh yea xD I thought so too. But that's why I was wondering why the fibres on my paper was kind of breaking down when this is 100% cotton :/ but someone did mention that erasing on the paper will damage the fibres, and I did erase quite a bit on this paper prior to painting on it, so that's probably why :))

The 100% Cotton makes a huge difference in how many layers you can add to a painting. So far, I love Arches the most but it is pricy so I save it for more thought out paintings, I practice in Fluid paper, which I also really enjoy.

Thanks for the info! I don't find it difficult to layer on cellulose paper, except for the hot pressed 25% cotton. Do you mean that the layering is more difficult when it comes to hot pressed?

Well, no one is mentioning it after two years, so why don't I? Could that have been the sizing that came off with rubbing, rather than actual fibers? IDK. I have enjoyed watching this, as I just bought that Fabriano Studio 25% cotton paper you spoke of, just to get my feet wet with hot press. I know once I improve (only been watercoloring for a month), I will want better materials. Arty-love from Texas!

My fine brushes tend to lose its hold and the tips bend easily. How can I maintain the sharp tip?
@Nianiani2 жыл бұрын
A yes. Natural hair brushes tend to do that and it holds more water. If you need a stiffer brush I'd recommend to use synthetic brush instead. They're also very cheap, which is a plus 😀
@maruzze2 жыл бұрын
If you don't mind advice from a beginner: If you are using artificial hair brushes, take a look at what sort of hair they are emulating. If it is faux squirrel, it will tend to be a bit floppy and I think tend to hold more water. If it is faux sable, it will be a lot snappier. I use Princeton Aqua Elite brushes (which emulate the sable) and am in love with them.
