They are usually used as displays in Japanese restaurants to show the costumers what the food actually looks like so they can order. It is very popular in Japan. Since it is so realistic, you can hardly tell the difference. I've always wondered if they changed their displays a couple of weeks each time but turns out they're not even real at all XD

It's like konapun in the sense that you make realistic fake food, but if you go to restaurants or cafeterias, sometimes they will have a plate of food displaying what they have on the menu. If you search for "Begin Japanology Plastic Food Sample" you can see people making them by hand, it's amazing how realistic it is :D
