Wow, that worker was really angry at you for saving yourself from being trapped in a freezer? And the manager being so blasé about a potentially dangerous design flaw with the freezer door? That’s a toxic work environment if I do say so myself.
@nez_ic2 жыл бұрын
Sounds about right for food services/retail
@BeepBoopBee Жыл бұрын
Not only toxic, but a lawsuit waiting to happen. If she would've been stuck there for a considerate amount of time or if ANYONE got injured from the incident, the company would've had to deal with a lawsuit and quite possibly a visit from OSHA. If the equipment is unsafe for employees to use, it can absolutely result in fines due to negligence. And seeing as how the incident where one worker was stuck in the freezer and another one almost got hit (hard) by the heavy metal door DIDN'T PROMPT THE COMPANY TO FIX THE DAMN DOOR, it's absolutely negligence on the part of the company. This is why you report such things to OSHA (or whatever the regulatory body in your country is) to make sure you're working in a safe environment. If you notice things that are very clearly result in someone getting hurt or worse, let it be known to management. If they refuse to fix it, report it to OSHA or in urgent cases the police. You have many rights and companies have a duty to make your work environment as safe as possible.

Funny, had a small buisness owner yell at me for having the freezer open to far. she wanted the door barely opened. aka closed while in it.
@Esbequut9 ай бұрын
Well, to be fair the worker probably did not know that she had been trapped in there. From their point of view, a girl just reclessly slammed open a heavy door that almost hit them. That worker could have gotten seriously hurt, and if I was in their postion, i would have gotten angry too, but calmed down after finding out why she did that.

Used to work as a frozen dairy manager at a gorcery store, and running into a situation like that has always been one of my low-key fears. Ik its too late now, but a good retort to your manager about the door could have been something along the lines of "Hopefully OSHA doesn't find out". They would have gotten that door fixed ASAP and learn to take you and other employees more seriously.
@daisyphinney103811 ай бұрын
I think they would've just fired you at that point lol. Least the people I have dealt with would

Reminds me of the time I slipped and fell in the -20 degree freezer, got wedged in-between pallets of product, and had to yell for help for close to 10 minutes because not a lot of people were around that early in the morning. 😅 My hip bothers me every now and again after that but thank God for workman's comp!

I'm honestly a bit surprised to hear that you didn't leave your job at the Bees' Lake Phylactery sooner. I mean, I can understand that there are certain situations where leaving isn't really an option, but it certainly sounds like miserable work, and definitely not worth almost dying in the freezer ONCE over, let alone three times if I'm not mistaking your explanation of it. Still though, I am glad to hear that you're well and that no one got too seriously injured, and that you did eventually get to go on to do your dream job! Keep up the great work, Star!

at my first(and currently only) job it took me weeks to figure out how I take breaks because no one thought to tell the person who had never had a job before how. Then a week or two after I finally figured it out by watching my coworkers and asking the occasional question, I learned that not only did I get an additional break no one again mentioned to tell me about, but the meal breaks I had been taking I was supposed to clock out for them. still better than when they said they'd call us to let us know when we were scheduled to go back and I learned when I was meant to go back by getting an email saying I missed my first day back. this was a bit more rant than I meant sorry

food service is hell, and in my experience 90% of the hellish part is the people running the show. The customers aren’t nearly as bad as some people assume, at least compared to management
@melon_man_three7210 Жыл бұрын
I’m in food service now and I’m really happy here. I can vouch that this type of stuff is almost a daily occurrence and it depends entirely on the attitude everyone has towards it. Some kitchens respond very negatively like that cook with the freezer and some are nonchalant like the manager. The overall attitude really makes or breaks the experience.

The reason kitchen staff uniforms are typically white is specifically *because* stains and dirt show easily. If you are unaware or forget that you spilled on your uniform the risk is that you contamine the food you're handling. While I commisserate with having to buy the clothes yourself and the other issues mentioned, the clothes being white is perfectly reasonable.

8:00, this story is so relatable, lol, I'm working in retail right now but I pick and pack online orders so I NEVER interact with costumers (and also this was my third day). A woman asked me as I was heading to the back to open up a dressing room for her and I said "sure no problem let me get someone!" And I guess the assistant manager didn't register that I had no idea how to do this so she was like "oh just grab the key its in yada yada room." So then I was like "uhh... ok..." wanting to make a good impression and then proceeded to open a room PRAYING I had knocked loud enough and there was really nobody in there, then I had to bolt to the back and ask a coworker in secret if I was supposed to lock the door BEHIND her. (Extra context to this story is that I'm autistic. Pro-tip to any managers with an autistic employee, _please_ fully explain how to carry out a task if you know they're doing it for the first time, even if it seems pretty self explanatory. We get tripped up on those little details people don't even register as important or think of as "common sense" more easily!)

A white uniform is especially awful when you're a woman. During your period, you'll look like you sat down in a murder scene. Also! I have small feet, and shopping for shoes is just as tortuous. I'm a size 6, sometimes, it depends, but it's around that size. I was looking for a pair of platform heels for the first day of school, and all the shoes I could find were a couple sizes too big. I finally found a pair of shoes that were a size six, but those were still too big. Surprise, I slipped, fell on my knees, and got a hole in my only pair of athletic leggings. I was looking for jeans that day too, and I could never find ones that fit right. I'm thick with short legs, and I either had to suck in my stomach to get them on, or they bunched up around my knees and ankles. There's no winning!!!
