Alex - cohabitation by unmarried men and women is illegal in Kuwait. People get around this with a special temporary marriage, so she really is married and would need to get a divorce. But the temporary marriage is pretty easy to dissolve. It has to be renewed periodically and sometimes people keep renewing for many years. Others just keep it for very short periods, such as when visiting. I don't believe Salah would have risked legal problems by not getting the temporary marriage. He is not a Kuwaiti citizen but rather a Syrian refugee. He does not want to be deported back to Syria or spend time in a Kuwaiti jail.

Nikah Mut'ah marriages can be undone pretty darn quick depending on how long hubby states they will be cohabitating. It's just a guess on my part, but new muslimahs are often fooled by this "legal" arrangement. My thoughts run more to the insecurity of healthcare costs. Her health issues have become quite serious. I can imagine that feeling as sick as she has been and living in a strange land with a radically different culture can make you feel panicked and insecure. She may claim that Kuwait is her home in defence of her decision to return to Scatman, but when it comes to serious situations like failing health, there's no place like home. I'm sure her family is equally panicked wondering if she will get too sick to return home. Very sad tale, but I hope she follows through and returns to Canada. The weather will never suit her body temperament nor the rigid religious culture. The constant visa runs must be stressful. I'm sure she's fed up having to leave when she's not up to the task. Scatman is incapable of understanding her western mindset in any real way. He's been inculcated with a middle eastern view of life that's in many ways diametrically opposed to her western life experiences.
