Don't try it with a ladle at home. You can also burn a ladle. I recommend a coated pan. Even if that looks simple, it is important to control the heat, and you should stir it without resting until the sugar melts. And baking soda should be added in a small amount, and if you add too much, the bitter taste is too strong to eat.

We have the same street candy in Bangladesh too. Here it's called "Kotkoti". It used to be so popular. The hawkers would take old stuffs like old clothes, pots, pans, papers and in exchange give this candy to the children. our parents always tell us stories of them exchanging old stuffs from their home to get this candy. It's still pretty popular in villages but in city it's not seen at all.
