South Bengaluru’s popular vegetarian restaurant, Maiyas prides itself on serving the “purest, cleanest and tastiest food”, says 72 year-old Sadananda Maiya whose family has a legacy in food for nearly a century beginning with Mavalli Tiffin Rooms in 1924. And given his erstwhile venture, MTR Foods, it’s not entirely surprising to even find a food lab on the premises of his restaurant which merges the culinary traditions of South India with food science and technology. In this episode, I take in a quick tour of Maiyas, and also its crowd pleasing special vegetarian thali. Hope you enjoy this episode. Stay safe and happy eating!
Special Meals
This thali has everything you need for a satisfying, nourishing meal. First on the plate are hot, puffy puris, sans any residual oil, that goes well with a creamy potato saagu, a crunchy kosambari and palya (dry vegetable preparation). Next troops in a flavourful pulao, followed by anna (rice), sambar and rasam with a sweet payasam thrown in. Best to linger over this meal, nice and slow.

Please make video of Hotel Shivappa Benne Idly in Darasguppe near Shrirangpatna .It is a famous for its soft idlies, homemade butter and watery coriander -mint chutney in which it is managed and owned by a single person named Shivappa as the hotel name says and he only one does cooking, serving, cleaning, cashier etc in his hotel and the idly is only on the menu and nothing else. It is very delicious You must really try it

You should try Bharjari Oota of Roti Ghar at Gandhi Bazaar. It's the best lunch you can have. A combination of the north and south Indian dishes served hot. It's priced @150. Serves about 20 items for the same price. Includes an icecream at the end. You should definitely check it out.

The pioneers in packaged food, the family who introduced rave idly and a family who have been serving great food as long as 96 yrs and yet increasing the bar constantly. A couple of things as far as I remember was missing. This is almost the MTR menu. I have had the pulpy grape juice, the ambode and a wonderful icecream at the end with paan if my memory serves me right even at Maiyas. Things may have changed over time or due to covid they may have cut down the cold ice cream, raw betel leaves and the grape juice as they are uncooked. Great show yet again Mr Kripal. One may remember Hema Maiya', Mr. Sadanand is her uncle. Two observations: 1. Kosambri isnt boiled, lentils are soaked in water for 2-3 hrs. If its boiled then it becomes usli. 2. Anna and tilisaru which is typically a satvik saaru in south canara brahmin home is mostly savoured with GHEE, this doesn't contain onions or garlic as used in other rasam preparations in south India. This is also a touch sweeter and enjoyed in most households with ghee, so they have continued the practise.

Remember having visited Maiyas in 2013, with my brother in law and his family. (I dont have another chance probably bcoz the loving host is longer with us). Very decent clean food we enjoyed in Maiyas 👍

As someone who has been consuming saaru and saaranna my whole life, ghee definitely definitely rounds off the flavors well. Another fat that goes great with rasam or saaru is til/sesame oil or yellenne. Yummy 🤤 Edit: have to add before Mr.Maiya claims this to be the “cleanest” food, he would do well mask up properly.

Oh.. If I knew Kripal bhai was in Maiyas in 4 th block.. I too would have come there, since my house was just 2.5 km. . Originally Maiyas started MTR... Later it was, sold.. To Orkla Aka, Norway.. And started Maiyas.. Anyways.... Kripal ji can't hide his expressions.. His face tell everything.. He is very genuine and logical person. We realy enjoy his videos.. Thanks Kripal bhai..

Lunch at Maiya's is always something to relish and remember. It's one of the iconic lunches of Bangalore. (Others are MTR, Nandini, The Coorg, TKS Iyengar's, Hallimane Malleswaram, FishLand Gandhinagar, sukh sagar majestic Gujarati thalli,) Though I am a regular at Maiya's Jayanagar, I usually have breakfast and coffee in the silver cup!

Maiyaa restaurant food always maintains its taste. Good and quality of good food one can get and tasty items at Maiyaa. Bangalore and are God blessed because they get tasty tiffins and meals.The same we lack at Hyderabad. If they plan at Hyd they can earn a lot. At present we at Hyderabad are content with Tajakitchen and Davangere benne dosa. We are expecting some more Karnataka restaurants at Hyderabad.

Research done in Japan showed that eating with bare hands is significantly better than using spoons Esprscially in diabetics The tactile stimulation occurring minutes before oral stimulation and chewing releases insulin from pancreas earlier and in a more active way .Forks, Spoons Knives are not for Indians They were used by the lower classes in early europe since they had less access to handwash water later on it became widely used among all classes of europeans .

Infact MTR was also owned by the same owners of Maiyas. After they sold out their MTR to Norwegian company named Orkla for 80million in 2007, they started another venture named Maiyas. Sadananda Maiya started Maiyas.

I'm not sure if the menu's changed, but I remember having many more items in the special veg meals at Maiyas. It included some tambuli,an additional rice item like bisibele bath, holige and a fried item like vada if I'm not wrong. Maybe they've reduced the dishes due to the situation or what I had was different.
