Basting your patty is not actually going to matter that much despite adding a bit of extra buttery flavor. It's only when you start enhancing your butter with stuff like paprika, chili, garlic, parsley, and whatnot. That it actually can make a difference. The idea is that you allow the butter to be absorbed from the top of the burger rather than the bottom. I've done tests to see if it matters, and it doesn't, not by any noticeable means for someone who doesn't think about it.
