Why bananas are great: - sometimes I’m late for something, or just lazy, but I have to have some fruit after lunch. Apples are hard to eat, oranges make a lot of mess, but bananas are so easy to peel, to eat in less than a minute - I love how sweet they are - they go really well with corn flakes - banana cakes are amazing And a Brazilian plus: my favorite dish is Virado a Paulista, which is rice, beans, pork, cabbage (I think), fried egg and a deep fried banana. And my favorite Brazilian dessert: bolinho de chuva com banana - raindrop-shaped deep-fried doughnuts with a slice of banana inside.

Banana "flavour" does taste like banana, if you buy the correct banana. There is controversy over whether the banana flavour that we know was based on the specific strain of banana, or not (but I don't like coincidence). But the fact remains that if you eat a Gros Michel banana (still grown in some parts) they absolutely taste like banana milk shake/custard flavour etc. Gros Michel used to be the most common banana sold, but in the 50s whole crops were wiped out by Fusarium (commonly named Panama Disease), and cultivators moved to a strain that was resistant, the Cavendish. The Cavendish has much more complex flavours and ultimately tastes nothing like the Gros Michel (personally I'd argue that the Cavendish is virtually tasteless). Last year you may have seen reports that the Cavendish is now vulnerable to Fusarium. Time will tell how we handle that. But I cannot stress this enough: Whilst they are quite difficult to find, and expensive, do not pass up the chance to eat a proper Gros Michel banana if you get it.

Banana flavor is isoamyl acetate. You would immediately recognize it as a banana if you smelled it. It is not the only flavor that we taste in a ba'nan though. Other cultivars have more isoamyl acetate and thus more "banana" taste, but they do not taste like banana flavor either. This is not just a nanner problem. Most fruit flavorings only convey a part of the taste of the actual fruit.
