For my fellow lazy gourmands; you can semi-meal prep this by making the sauce ahead of time. Then each morning, just out some in a pan with some eggs and a splash of water, cook til done and cover with cheese and herbs, etc.

Oh my god, same!! I always add kidney beans to the sauce to make it more nutritious (chickpeas would probably be more region-appropriate but I just don't like it as much) and top it with fresh basil whenever I have it, or maybe sage. Should definitely try this recipe out though, it looks delicious

I made this for my daughter and myself when she was staying with me recently, and I can tell you, they were absolutely delicious!!! I made two variations to the recipe because I didn’t have the ingredients in the fridge. First, we used a little dollop of sour cream under the eggs and I used crumbled goat cheese on top instead of feta. Also, rather than cooking the eggs in the fry pan, I simply poached them and set them in the depression. I can’t wait to make them again, they were wonderful.

Jarred pasta sauce also makes a good shakshuka if you want to sneak in some extra flavor. This is in my top 5 brinner options for sure. Also, if you happen to read this, thanks for the homemade cheese videos. I rarely go through a gallon of milk or a pint of cream fast enough, so turning some of it into ricotta and then putting that in an easy lasagna is really /really/ satisfying.

you are a wonder, chef john! never change! I love the idea of the mushroom slices - I never had that. only one idea: in Israel, there's all kinds of eateries (from cafe chains to food trucks) who serve shakshuka. they always cook it covered - it gets all the white cooked, even if you want the yolk runny. And I agree with you, if the yolk isn't runny, the egg is not worth eating 🤭 and one last idea: you can serve the shakshuka with kalamate black olives, additional cubed feta and thina - on the side, in small bowls. yummy!! and if you're after a challenge, look up green shakshuka, and white one. I do believe they're just inventions of posh israeli restaurants, that try to be more plebeian 😈
