When I was a kid growing up outside the US (we were from a poor background) my great grandmother raised us all using old school cloth diapers and safety pins. Now that I am a new mom and financially capable, I still choose to use cloth diapers for my baby. Good for the pockets and the planet (and her bum skin too as some diaper brands give her groin rash). I still use disposable diapers too but not as much.

save time with the wash routine by using muslin flats as inserts
@JanaeCrawford4 жыл бұрын
How would that save time?
@krispyklean93764 жыл бұрын
@@JanaeCrawford its more efficient to wash one layer of fabric than to clean a multi-layered insert. You do not need as much detergent for flats, so build up is rare. Flats dry faster also. I recommend Green Mountain Diaper muslin flats because they are very absorbent and soft. I think Nicki Diaper sells smaller muslin flats, but the quality from GMD is superior to Nicki's. I have been cloth diapering for two years, and I started out with inserts. Switching to flats has made my cloth diapering wash routine less complicated-cold rinse, no detergent, hot wash, warm rinse. All of the detergent bubbles are gone (I have normal water, not hard or soft). If I travel, muslin flats can handwash with Zote laundry soap bar and hang up to dry. It doesn't hurt your hands to wring out.

@JanaeCrawford3 жыл бұрын
Not really, breastfed only poop - so poop until baby is like 6 months old give or take, isn’t really big and clumpy like it is when they start eating more and getting older (from my experience). It’s mostly mushy and since you wash the diapers by themselves without other clothes, once the wash it done there shouldn’t be any traces of that baby poop left in the washer since it literally just dissolves and gets cleaned away 👍🏽

How many diapers did you buy or started off with ? Do they come in different sizes?
@JanaeCrawford4 жыл бұрын
I had 6 to start with so I started by putting her in them one late afternoon till evening (used about 2 that day) then I did it most of the next day then I bought 6 more and when those came in i started cloth diapering how I do now.. during the day not at night. I realized I needed more so i bought 6 more a few daays later so i had 18 total. 18 is fine, but after about a month I realized a few more would be better because I notice some days I have to put her in disposables because I haven't gotten to do the laundry yet and have no more diapers left so I bought 7 more and now have 25. You could totally make due with 18 but I like that I have 25 now so that I have more in rotation tand hey won't get worn out as fast. They are one size so they 'grow' with your baby into toddlerhood so you shouldn't have to buy more which is awesome.

I KNOW this is probably such a weird question!! Poopy diapers? Does it all wash away completely the first time, and does smell linger at all? Also is this effective after they start eating foods?? Do you wrap the poop up and keep it wrapped in the wet bag and just throw in the whole poop???? I’m so new to this way and I’d really like to know more before
@sheridanstringer29323 жыл бұрын
I just started cloth diapering! So first off if your baby only breastfeeds you can just put the diaper in the wet bag to wash later because breast fed babies poop ( no solid food) is completely water soluble! If you use formula just rinse in toilet , use shower head or diaper sprayer and then put in the wet bag. If your baby eats solid just dump the solids in the toilet and rinse if necessary or just put in wet bag. (or use biodegrade liners and you can just throw away the poop. I usually do a cold rinse and spin first so you don’t wash in poopy water then I do a normal load with all free and clear detergent and some baking soda! Either line dry or dry on low in the dryer!

how many times a day do you change baby and how many cloth diapers do you have in total? also, would this make sense to do if you dont have a washer/dryer in your home?
@JanaeCrawford2 жыл бұрын
Every baby is different so it just depends how often your baby goes- mine was always on the lighter side and wasn’t a heavy wetter so I usually changed her every 3 hours or so unless she pooped then I would change it right away. I had about 21-28 diapers & I personally probably wouldn’t cloth diaper if I didn’t have an in home washer and dryer since you wash them every 2-4 days depending how many you have but I’m sure people do. Hope this helped ❤️

I’m confused …after you take the poopy diaper off do you clean anything off of the insert or do you just leave it soiled and put it in the wet bag?

Yup. As long as baby is just drinking breast milk everything goes straight in the wet bag to later be washed in the washing machine.
@flippinrock2 жыл бұрын
How many did you use per day and did you pre rinse it in the sink or toilet 🚽 before putting it in the washer?
@JanaeCrawford2 жыл бұрын
It’s really different for everyone because every baby is different. Some are heavy wetters and need to be changed more frequently than lighter wetters so it’s really custom to your baby. No, I never pre rinsed before putting it in the washer when she was just eating breast milk 🙂
@jessicarentchler7983 жыл бұрын

@JanaeCrawford2 жыл бұрын
No worries 🙂 if baby is only eating breast milk then no need to wash it - the whole soiled diaper (with poop) can go into the washer since it’s water soluble - and no it didn’t cause a huge increase in my water bill - slight yes, but not anything dramatic.
@taliagaskell3832 жыл бұрын
How much detergent do you use? Every answer I see online is incredibly complicated. I only have 12 diapers when I wash.
@JanaeCrawford2 жыл бұрын
Whatever detergent I have, I just do a little more than what it says to do for that size of load. Like if the detergent bottle says to fill the cap halfway for a small load, then I’ll do a bit more than halfway. Or if I have the squeeze bottle detergent if it says do one full squeeze for a normal size load of laundry, I’ll do like 1.5 squeezes. Does that make sense?
@tiffanyfett11592 жыл бұрын
So, do you dump the poop out of the cloth as much as possible or you're literally throwing the diaper full of poop into the washing machine? I'm curious as to why, as my baby was breast fed for 2 mos then formula fed and poop wasnt really different as far as level of gross. The breastmilk poo had more chunks in it, I'm guessing from the high fat content.
@JanaeCrawford2 жыл бұрын
No I threw the whole thing in the washer. If baby has formula then you would need to get as much off first before putting it in the machine 😌
@astihunny3 жыл бұрын
First timer here, so I’m sorry if you’ve already answered this question 🙈 Have you experienced diaper rash, especially since you don’t wipe her if she only pees? The wet liner doesn’t press through the cloth and touch their skin? Do you need to change their cloths out EVERY time they pee or can you hold off for two hours?
@JanaeCrawford3 жыл бұрын
Hi there 👋🏽 no worries haha so the only time I dealt with almost diaper rash was when I would keep her in the cloth diapers overnight. That’s when I realized diaper rash was starting so I switched back to regular diapers during the nighttime and it immediately went away and didn’t progress further. & I would change her every couple of hours, not every single time she peed since it’s only a little bit in there. Every 2-3 hours depending on how much your little one pees. Every baby is different. Some may need to be changed every 1-2 hrs some can go more like 3. Unless they poop I would change her right after she is done pooping. Also diaper rashess are actually more prone to happen when their skin is very wet for example from wiping their bottom with wipes every time you change them and not letting the area dry properly before diapering them back up. That’s why I didn’t feel the need to wipe every single time unless it was a full wet diaper I would give it a quick wipe and air dry it with the diaper if that makes sense.
@DeepRootedwithTulani3 жыл бұрын
@@JanaeCrawford if your using cloth then even when you wipe them then the moisture will be taken up by the cloth. Especially pockets because they are made to wick away moisture. Not wiping the urine off your baby is never a good idea. When we pee we are eliminating toxins letting it sit on the the skin is what can cause rashes. It also leaves their skin smelling like urine. Do you wipe/clean yourself when you pee? Why wouldn’t you want to clean your baby?!

They should be made Tag-less; that's my only complaint. And you can't go wrong with baby wipes and J&J Baby Powder with aloe to prevent against rashes. (also, ALWAYS wipe even for just pee, then powder.) Rashes come from urine or even just sweat in sensitive spots, when not properly wiped; they can rub raw and are terrible... plus the baby can't say, "I'm chafing from my rash when I crawl! Mom and/or Dad."
