What an OG! This is one of the best videos I've seen on the color overal, digital art and theory behind it! The amount of knowledge in 10 minutes is insane! I've considered myself a good color picker, but oh boy, this changed my game so much!

This is the first and probably last time I'll ever comment on youtube. Wow. This is amazing. I was just so sick of videos spouting the same old stuff about complementary and analogous colours. Here is something actually useful. Just keep mixing colours til you get what you need, knowing that they will look good with each other, perfect. I had to adapt the method as I'm using a vector illustration app on an ipad. Firstly, I made three circles with my three base colours. Then I made a new layer set to 30% opacity with three new circles of the same colour as the originals and overlapping them. I then went back to the original layer and make more circles, eyedropping the colour from the overlaps. And repeat. And also did the light and dark mixer colours too. A bonus of this method is that, say, for red and yellow I can make a yellowy red and a reddy yellow just depending on which direction I go in, yellow on red or red on yellow. The ability to make green depended on the yellow, if it was an orangey yellow then it wouldn't work, had to start with a greeny yellow. Thank you so much for this, it's a game changer for me.

I've been looking for something like this to help me get started on my coloring phase so I can get past my over practiced sketching phase because I didn't know what to do.

Thank you for this video. The hue layer for values will really help me. Also the greens trick is so smart. Thank you for sharing what you’ve learned after so much experience!

It doesn't matter which or what light source is affecting the picture. If all colors share same "mood" and are mixed with each other - our eye enjoys it. Good work on explaining how bouncing light mechanism works

THANK YOU!!!!! This is so useful. I usually paint with traditional methods, scan and modify on computer and felt like not know how to create harmonious color palettes digitally was a big hurdle preventing me from moving into doing some of my paintings digitally. Now I want to try to create repeat patterns and need to simplify my workflow while still keeping the look of traditional painting so this method you are illustrating in the video is super helpful. And the way you explained everything really helped me grasp the concept as is it quite similar to what I would do with traditional paints, only digitally. Thank you for sharing this!

Really cool video, thanks a bunch! I found your brushes through drawfee (they're almost always using your inkbox set) but I wasn't expecting to see anything even approaching such an incredible ream of information and advice. Really appreciate what you do, and I can't wait to try out some of your brushes for myself.

Do you recommend using blending mode paint brushes to make a color palette? For example if I use soft light to make the shadow colors

@kyletwebster

Yes, definitely. The three illustrations that flashed on the screen briefly near the beginning of the video were done with this method. I use it for literally everything. It just makes things so much easier for me.

Nice method thank you for the tutorial! Just curious, but when you use the eyedropper tool, is the eyedropper set to "current layer" or "all layers"? I imagine the choice of canvas color would effect it if its set to all layers.
@kyletwebster
@kyletwebster 2 жыл бұрын
It is set to ‘all layers’ - this has no real bearing on the colors I pick as long as they are fully opaque. Basically, whatever I see on the screen is what I get on the brush, so there are no surprises.

I’m fascinated by the way you build pallets. But when it comes to creating skin tone/hair color from these pallets I’m lost. Any tips?
@kyletwebster
@kyletwebster Жыл бұрын
I think the key is to focus on mixing a lot of neutrals - skin is not very saturated in color. Mix your secondary colors with each other and use your white and ‘black’ colors to desaturate them a bit.

Also I have your brushes from the pre-adobe days and the current ones loaded in Photoshop CC and don't see the kyle's paintbox: creamy variation in either tools or brushes. Is it stored elsewhere?
@kyletwebster
@kyletwebster 2 жыл бұрын
It should be in the Megpack Paintbox, but it’s *possible* that I created it for my own use and never included it in those sets (hard to remember with over 1900 brushes!). Don’t worry - the regular Creamy brush does the same thing.
