So, having now listened to all of season 1, here are my impressions. Overall a very enjoyable and well made production with decent enough pacing and a creeping sense of unease. The first time I heard the radio transmission I had genuine goosebumps. My main objections would be that I really disliked Dr. Schumacher the way she was written. Her arc as the "afflicted" is a classic element of stories like these, but she was in the end almost annoyingly passive and her tearfulness was turned solely inwards, never affecting or even showing itself to any other character. No one listened to her at all, which was very strange to me. If I was an experienced polar worker and a member of my team upon waking up from a serious injury said they were attacked by something making them jump, I would assume that there might for example have been a polar bear that had gained access to the cave complex from another tunnel or crevasse. Instead the rest of the team not only does not believe her, but also do not come to the conclusion that she has some sort of brain damage from her fall. They just don't... react to her state. Schumacher herself acts as if none one believed her though, to the point that she doesn't talk to anyone about anything, which I think misses out on a lot of interesting interaction with the other characters. The rise of digital media and recording has given a lot more space for the found record type of horror story, but unfortunately at the end of this series, the plot has started to bump up against its limitations. And tbf I think the writer kind of felt that too, since you have characters trying to justify why they are writing things down, which unfortunately has the opposite effect and broke the fourth wall a couple of times. It's not on the level of Robert Bloch's "Notes Found In An Abandoned House" or Lin Carter's "They're coming through the door as I write this, they AAAAGH", but having the story end with was is essentially an action scene instead of a mysterious event was a choice that was very hard to execute effectively. I think a better take if you wanted to end with Schumacher's abduction would have been to make the scene a lot more chaotic, with gun shots, screams and howling winds, cutting off abruptly. The shaky note by the transmitter... It didn't really work, sorry to say. All that said though, I did like the story a lot, everything else was of a markedly above average quality and will be happy to listen to the next season.
@CrowSkeleton
@CrowSkeleton 4 жыл бұрын
Ending the recording during all that yelling and and banging then a note saying no more than "gone down trapdoor after Karina" - at once an acknowledgement of haste and that they might not come back - would have been 100% more effective. I have further seasons ready ahead of me, though, so I'm not complaining. Onward!
@Alexandra-ez8rj
@Alexandra-ez8rj 3 жыл бұрын
I know you made this comment ages ago, sorry, but I agree entirely with you. Dr. Schumacher wasn't particularly gripping to me, and to have her last entry be 'I'm gonna die and I'm sad about it' wasn't particularly emotionally compelling. I didn't get enough going on to feel, like her, that it was inevitable, and to just lie down and die and accept it. I'm not sure why so much of it was taken from written logs. Its a major complaint I have with a lot of media that chooses to use them, as so much of it doesn't stand up to the question, 'why was this written down?' Some of it made sense, the official reports and everything, but it was overused, and often didn't work, as you pointed out. The ending felt... anticlimactic. I didn't expect an explanation, as explanation is the death of horror, but for all this long, slow build for nearly no pay off was strange. I would have expected this to be the second to last episode in a season, and for there to be one more to finish it off about their pursuing her. Or, as you mentioned, doing it through a chaotic audio recording also sounds like a better execution. I'd even have taken this, but it settled on a more certain, morally gray and dark, 'She was taken, and we're abandoning her and leaving.' Obviously, that probably couldn't happen for set up for future seasons, and maybe this is all rectified going forward. I guess I'll see. The production quality alone is worth continuing to see if it sticks the landing a bit better next season. But I thought your analysis was great and agreed with your points. Thanks!

@@Alexandra-ez8rj Thank you for commenting. I ended up not listening to the next season since the initial episode didn't seem to indicate that the writers were going to evolve anytime soon. There's so much content out there and I've since raised my standards a little for this kind of audio drama. I don't regret having listened to it, and still don't think it's bad per se. But there's better findings out there.

The tension builds steadily with each episode. The short, vague reveals of the cause of the terror & turmoil invite the imagination to darker and darker flights of fancy. Some final notes re captions (English). The auto generation truly is atrocious with the same words being translated differently each time, often incorrectly. The rare profanities, while spoken clearly, are never translated. The reason I keep harping about captions is that I'm a visual learner, my comprehension increases exponentially when the spoken is paired with print. Given that this is performance based, there must be a script that was read and I see no reason why that script could not have been attached as a transcript. Finally, since no one appears to have survived the expedition I'm left believing that there are new boxes in the auditorium and fresh teeth embedded in new stairs to the depths.

Allright, leading thesis until now: Its all the coffee. Think about it: Probably the storyteller want to go for something more sinister, but i think, they simply all fall victim to poisoning through the water/the coffee they make of it. Lead poisoning cant lead to mental illness that quick, but the sheer amount of coffee they all consume constantly apparently makes them hallucinate, paranoid and probably soon followed by hysteria. After all, everything that happened so far are "noises", figures, supposed teeth, sabotage, supposed scratch marks... Its the contaminated coffee, i tell you^^.

I like it..but i feel like...idk. the way Dr. Schumacher was written wasn't quite...best for the how the story played out? It's difficult to explain but i feel like the story could have been better if the way she was written, and how the other characters interacted with her, had more thought put into it.

Came here from Second Wind and I am enjoying the slow burn and the atmosphere so far. However, I feel that Dr. Schumacher's character is a weak point in the writing. After her fall she stopped being a contributing member of the team and instead became a constant whiny victim. Her recording leaned too heavily into "I have a loving family and so much to live for" that she was practically holding a neon sign saying "I sure hope nothing bad happens to me in particular". She stopped being a character stuck in a horror situation like the rest of the cast and became a full blown '"horror movie character" instead. During her teary recording and her being taken I felt nothing for her, in fact I was a little relieved to potentially be hearing less of her. I can tell that's not what you were going for with her, but to make it effective Karina should have been more likable so that I fear for her and her being the first victim less telegraphed. Regardless, I will continue listening as I am impressed with the acting and production quality.
