Keiko was in such a shallow tank. Even if his whole body was vertical, his tank was shorter than him. Seeing the rashes on his shoulders and fluke is just terrible. I am glad the Oregon Coast Aquarium were able to heal him before it was too late. 20 years since "Free Willy", and I was only 1 year old when it came out. It makes me wish I could've been old enough to experience that era with generous kids helping a great guy find his way home. RIP Keiko, God gave you eternal freedom in Dec, 2003.

@alexanderpytko539410 жыл бұрын
Yeah, his dorsal fin is completely down. This is like 1990 here and just 3 years earlier he made a guest appearance on a Mexican drama called, "TELENOVELA QUINCEAÑERA". Back then his dorsal fin was still up but you could tell it was starting to go down. The thing is over the 7 years he spent in Mexico, he got much bigger but unfortunately, his tank did not. A tank like that is alright for dolphins to swim in but it's not good enough for an orca. If you look closely, you can see that he already has the skin rash, too. Though, I heard that the rash started developing when he was still in Canada before Reino Aventura bought him.
@alexanderpytko539410 жыл бұрын
The unfortunate thing is once an orca's dorsal fin has collapsed, it can NEVER go back up again. It's permanent. For some strange reason, it even sometimes happens to wild orcas, I've heard.
@FeuerblutRM6 жыл бұрын
That was because Keiko lived in water far too warm for an orca. Since they just have soft tissue in their dorsal fins they need cold and deep water for the fin to support its own weight.
@j.s.22815 жыл бұрын
The doral fin collapsing happens because he spends so much time close to the surface and gravity doing it's think but you are right that he didn't have much space. Despite the bad pool situation, his owners have SO much more of my respect than owners of orcas at sea world. At least keiko was given a chance for a happier life.

personally I think he'd be still alive today if he wasn't put in the ocean. I'm not all for captivity but he was raised by people his whole life, and he didn't know how to hunt for his own food and he was alone because people couldn't interact with him. It was a stupid idea that they did that to him. They weren't setting him "free" they were killing him. And he died of a pneumonia. Poor, Keiko. He didn't even act like he was suffering he was happy. Unlike Tillikum, there is something wrong with him, possibly mental problem.
@SailorMonkees928 жыл бұрын
+Rhubiarb I agree that he was released improperly, and that he was attached to people, but in my opinion, he loved people, too. He shouldn't been captured in the first place, but according to some footage of him I have seen, he really loved people. But otherwise, I agree with you.
@mystiquesword8 жыл бұрын
actually keiko DID know how to hunt on his own. he was taught that before being allowed to romp about. the trainers felt bad for the fish they had to chop up while still alive to teach him slowly how to chase & catch them. they'd chop off their fins & tails so they'd swim slower & as keiko got the idea...they cut less & less off the fish until they were just throwing in good healthy fish. he learned very fast...thank god. if they had only left him in the puget sound he'd be fine. what got him was the colder waters which caused his pneumonia & ice floes he wasnt used to. they should have GRADUALLY acclimated him into the cooler zones & taught him about busting through the ice. (apparently he showed signs on his head of trying to break ice ...some bumps/minor scrapes....noting major but still...it was obvious he didnt know how to break ice yet.) but apparently they had found his real mother via DNA tests & were too excited for reunification that they jumped ahead..... i still say they should have left him here in the puget sound area...but i understand the want to reunite the family. what they could have done is maybe leave him in the open water pen & let HER come to him & then she could have taught him the rest....if she recognized him.

@IAmADalek In a report published about his release, it says that he used to travel with wild orcas for several days at a time, was seen hunting with them. He was seen with marks associated with mating and stayed the same healthy weight until he died of a common disease. He would have been fed and cared for again all winter until they returned - hardly abuse is it

Still, he was still happier than in captivity, was able to live 7 years free while during that time 22 orcas died captive, was able to recover from his illness and even meet other orcas. In short, Keiko proves that rehabilitation is possible and that it is better than the chlorine pools under the scorching sun and the loud music of SeaWorld and its sectors but also of all the other parks. Right, SeaWorld lover but not lover of dolphins or even just orcas? I think you know you put your subscriptions in public on your channel and your other channels, right? And moreover I think you know that a lot of your videos shows the sadness of captive orcas, tursiop and sea lions in Your others channels. @ShadowLightMewEndlessOceanMew3 жыл бұрын
@@Cocoon_Memelord He recovered in human care, in an Aquarium in Oregon, not in the sea pen. He was happier with humans, not in a sea pen or whhile being forced to be a wild Orca. Keiko was and still is the worst release candidate period! Animal Welfare is not about forcing human wishes onto an animal! You really really need to do some proper research! SeaWorld does not chlorinate their water, in fact they have been using the local sea water for decades. SeaWorld San Diego uses the Mission Bay water for all of their pools. SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Antonio too use real sea water that they keep clean and on the correct temperatures year round. I do not show their sadness cause they are not sad at all, what is saddening is antis having forced SeaWorld into gender separating the Orcas. Animal Welfare is about the animals' needs, any caretaker and trainer would say the same thing. I have worn wetsuits, i have experience in animal care & training and i know how animal husbandry works. Keiko and all animals in human care should stay in human care, Keiko should have stayed in human care. They could have helped Reino Aventura make a proper habitat for him with proper filtration and the correct water temperature etc. I still feel bad to this day for the female trainers he had, they never got to say goodbye, they never got to see him again once he left Mexico. They loved him so much and Keiko looked forward to seeing them every day. But selfish human wishes were all that mattered, getting that fake Hollywood ending was all that mattered. Truly disgusting, read Killing Keiko to see some real accounts instead of just the fairytale version they still try selling to this day. And actually visit places like SeaWorld, go behind the scenes, express your concerns to the trainers, they don't bite and do answer every question with full honesty. There are 2 sides to every story after all and i will continue opposing the proposals of further ripping the Shamu families apart, especially with the "release plans". Would Corky be happier staying with her current family or laying floating all alone in a sea pen in the waters she came from? She would pick the Shamu family she has been with for decades and yes i can say this because i met her in person and have watched her spend time with the other Orcas and yes she has formed bonds with them just like with the trainers

I am a little confused by what you mean that he was offered to Seaworld. He did live for a brief period in Marineland in Canada. He was too passive for the other orcas so they wanted to sell him and the park in Mexico bought him. I don't recall him being offered to Seaworld. The reason Keiko was so popular in Mexico is because he was only 1 of 2 performing orcas in the entire country of Mexico. Orcas are not native to Mexico because it is very warm there and orcas don't hang around in warm areas, they prefer to stay where it's much colder. The water in his tank was far too warm, even if they made it colder, it would still heat up from the sun and temperature in Mexico. The water in his tank may be fine for people and dolphins to swim in but orcas require much colder waters because they have a lot of body heat. Being in a warm tank in an area where the temperature is warm most of the time is not healthy for an orca which was big contributor of why Keiko was so sick. Orcas, even trained orcas just don't belong in Mexico.

@IAmADalek They're starting to think that it has to do with the weight of the fins vs the pressure of the water. Since tanks don't go as deep there isn't enough pressure to hold the males fins up.

@xxtasha10xx Several of my video's feature wild orca, as well as my other channels And as for not drawing attention to seaworld - how can you educate people to a cruelty without talking / showing people things and SeaWorld is not about the health of the animal but about money. Jim Antrim, a SeaWorld vice president -.”If these animals perished, you'd just go out and replace them. The ease of replacing them didn't drive a great deal of research of what they needed to keep them healthy.''

I don't like seeing orcas in captivity but one upside is that unlike most other captive orcas, he still has all his teeth.

Next time you think about taking Wheels out of the wild don't because they can viruses and that's not good how would you like it if you were real and they took you out of the ocean and you didn't see a mom or dad think about that when he hasn't sent his mother but he's in his entire family maybe you should take that into some consideration

@xxtasha10xx errr, no. You obviously havan't watched all my videos. Such as the one with experts commenting about captivity being bad or the ones about SeaWorld being responsible for the Taiji slaughters or the ones that show dolphins and orcas at SeaWorld showing stess or bordom behaviours or the ones showing SW catching wild orca or read any of my comments or the links I gave to my anti cap pages or the videos I've liked or the people I'm friends with or....................................

@xxtasha10xx "Your opinion isn't the whole worlds" - I know, otherwise I wouldn't be protesting would I. duh. "You know seaworld can make sick children feel better?" - then you have not read the scientific reports about seeing / swimming with dolphins makes no difference to a sick child compared to other thearapy, such as swimming or stroking a horse. "Lolita -people protested for her and they haven't done anything about" - then why are the government being sued for mistreating her?

He did not die free. What he died from was real animal abuse. He was with people his entire life and didn't know what he was supposed to do when he was in the ocean. There were signs that he was not doing well, but the crew didn't care. They wanted to make a fictional film real. Compared to the footage of him in captivity, he never had any signs of suffering. He may have gotten sick from living in a bad condition in Mexico. But he was still a sweet and loving baby and the Oregon coast aquarium took better care of him. He was happy with his life. It wasn't his choice to be free, it was the arrogant activists that chose it. Doesn't matter if you think he was not doing well in captivity or was, he did not deserve the way he died. He died free? He died suffering for a movie.

Iceland hunted him and his mother in the first place, and seperated them screaming! In Iceland, Norway and Japan the government allow to hunt and kill whales.
