I had a short leg walking cast years ago. A nurse was doing the cutting and went too deep and left the saw in one place too long and it burned/ sliced the skin for about 1 1/2 inches. I told her she was cutting me when it was taking place and she "reassured" me the saw wouldn't cut me. When she removed the front part of the cast and saw the blood she didn't know what to say.

They didn't have the correct blade for a fiberglass cast back then so it got very "warm" before she got all the cutting done. She didn't realize just how warm it was till she saw the side of my foot bleeding. With the correct blade it is much harder to break the skin. For you first timers it may scare you but you will be fine.

Back in late March 2012 that I had a short cast on my left leg for my broken ankle. I remembered the saw did tickle my leg a little bit. I had surgery on that ankle. I wore that cast for 4 weeks as I remembered. Just 4 days after my cast was removed my leg lost some muscle in it. Even the swelling was gone, too. My parents helped me during my recovery from it. I wore the boot cast the longest which that I could take it off. It was a weird feeling to have a cast on my leg.

In the ER, they asked me to cut open someone's cast but I didn't feel confident enough to use the saw so I told them "I can't, not enough experience". I've seen a nurse do it and I know they did it wrong just by watching videos and seeing a PA do it. I always fear that the blade is gonna go deep and cut the skin.

Been in a cast from 10/06 was due to have it x-rayed again 11/02 But Covia got me, sol had to isolate and rescheduled. Now recovered and negative for Covid, I have no sense of smell or taste, still. My OT appt isnt til next Wed on 11/09. This video helped relieved my anxiety about the removal. 5 weeks of wearing this cast! I will be happy to have it off and use both my hands on tasks! 4 fingers and no opposable grip in a slippery fiberglass cast! LOL! I hope I can have it removed at my next visit. Trying to smell/taste everything to get my sense of smell taste back. I work as a HCA and been off work because I need to be fully capable to work, so its been awhile. What a run of bad luck!🤣😭

They didn't do any tests. They just removed the cast and told me to go home and take it easy. I was still limping and using crutches but my leg got better in like 2 weeks. I stopped using the crutches. You will be able to put your leg down or wear clothes and shower and stuff but not 100% . I was taking like 3minute showers. But your leg gets used to it....don't push yourself. Listen to your body. Youl know when you can walk again. You can feel your leg is stronger.

Get a zip stick. It'll protect the skin from the blade. Sometimes you can't fit the zip stick in so it's important to have good skill with handling a cast saw.

There is also saw stop tape but it's expensive and usually reserved for aqua casting. But it can be applied on a regular cotton cast making the cast removal process safer.
