In Tip 9 of Football Coaching Strategy and Training Tips with Coach Bill Renner, Coach Renner explains the play calling philosophy he used to improve and increase his quarterback's deep ball throwing percentage while limiting interceptions. He tells you how he had an Elite 11, #5 QB in the country who threw 17 interceptions in his first year as a starter. Upon analyzing the game video of these interceptions, he determined that a play calling philosophy change was needed. A philosophy change that would take advantage of the defense schemes being played between the -1 to the +30 yard lines and would also reduce the chances of a quarterback throwing interceptions. Coach Renner gives specific details of how and why to implement pass plays that have short, intermediate and deep routes in their design. He shows you two of his pass plays and describes how to implement the short to deep philosophy for the quarterback. He then provides game videos which demonstrate this play calling strategy in action. Coach Renner finished his 30-year play calling career having scored a touchdown in 147 straight games using this philosophy. This stretch included 3 different teams and 6 different quarterbacks. Watch this video for food for thought on how to improve your deep ball throwing efficiency.
