As an amateur anthropologist, I hope this answer will help: football teams and claiming you’re a part of their victories or losses are part of the culture of belonging. It’s kinda the same for the olympics. It’s sort of like the athlete competing is a representation of you and the country or city or wherever you’re from. So you feel represented, thus feeling like you’re a part of the athletes’ accomplishment It’s something on the lines of nationalism (if we’re talking about something as grand as the Fifa World Cup). Football culture is extremely powerful and can bring a nation together and rip it apart. I think the countries on Honduras and El Salvador in Central America had a war over football in the 60s. Powerful stuff man... ⚽️

Football isn't dumb, it's the people that play football. They take EVERYTHING SOOOO seriously. If they lose a round of football they just start blaming each other or saying that the match was unfair or even fight.. A few questions from Non-American I would like to answer: Why do you call it Soccer instead of Football?: Soccer is the shortened term for Association Football, and since we already have a sport called Football, it would get kind of confusing if they both had the same name. Also, Americans sometimes accept the term “Futbol” as an alternative to Soccer. Why is it called Football if you throw the ball with your hand?: Both British and American Football gets it’s name because you use your feet to run around the field instead of riding on a horse’s back. This means that this argument doesn’t make any sense and it reflects how little some people know about the sport.

For those of you who don't know: Football is what Europeans call soccer. While Football in America is a name of a sport where players throw and run around with a specially design ball that's more oval in shape with pointy ends to make it more aerodynamic to make it easier to throw and kick farther to score touchdowns and to kick it into a yellow goal that's held up in the air on a pole.
