He was dumbfounded as how it happened, we spend the next 1/2 hr watching the Play by play commentary and replay for the last 5 mins of brilliance. Btw, my dad also bet some $5,000 on united winning. Even as an Arsenal fan, I don’t think anything with top this. Man City are more than likely to win the treble this year, fair play to them (not financial tho). However, they really have walked it to get where they are. This United team had THAT match against Juventus, THAT match against Barcelona, and of course, *THAT MATCH* in the final against Bayern. Imagine loosing 2-1 despite leading 1-0 for 89 minutes. And United also battled for the title, winning the league on the last day, and had an incredibly tense FA Cup semi final against us that featured that Bergkamp miss and that Giggs goal in the last minute. Legendary stuff.

@zimzimma56883 жыл бұрын
It's historical revisionism that Paul Scholes was the deep-lying playmaker in that team and Keane was the "midfield enforcer." Scholes didn't move back into a deep-lying playmaking role until later in his career, at that time as you pointed out he actually tended to be the one who got up behind the strikers or made the late runs into the box, although so did Keane, just not as frequently as he did in the earlier part of the decade. Midfielders at that time to a certain extent were all what we would now call box to box. But in that team for the most part it was Keane who was the playmaker, he was the one taking the ball off the center backs and fizzing passes from deep into the strikers feet or into space for players to run on to. He was a master of unspectacular but highly efficient passing, the man was a metronome. He also had an amazing touch and was highly press resistant, very rarely giving the ball away. This modern characterization that I see made over and over again by people who are so young that they never actually saw him play or maybe caught the final couple of years of his career when they were very young (not you specifically) as this technically untalented midfield enforcer who just went around kicking people is simply ridiculous. He was easily in the top 5 most complete midfield players in the world for the best part of a decade and would of walked into any single team in the world either at club or international level during that period.

If the terrible disaster in Munich hadn’t happened, Real Madrid wouldn’t have won 5 European cups in a row between 1956-1960. We only just lost to them in the 1956/57 European cup semi final and they were still kids playing for United.
