The formation used in the second half is the one that Moriyasu was best known for when he won three championships with Sanfrecce Hiroshima during his time in the j-League. But he has not done it since becoming national coach. Some criticized why Moriyasu did not play football like Hiroshima. Hundjflik said he had watched 60 games of Japan's national team, But Moriyasu never used tactics like the second half against Germany. I think Hundjflik was surprised. Moriyasu kept his tactics under wraps for four years.

Mitoma came on in the second half. He is a 1v1 demon. I don’t think any fullback in the world would want to face him. Can go any way. Excellent close control. Also has himself a bit of pausa, which coupled with his elite positional sense and ability to assess the game, makes him very underrated. He just needs to be more decisive in his end product and there’s no reason why he could not play for a top 4 side in the prem. Brighton’s scouting, once again- chapeau.

You didn't mention the turning point of japan tactical.. Japan had lack of aggresivity when they played veterans (nagatomo and sakai) as a wing back, so moriyasu changed his wing backs (nagatomo - sakai) with more attacking player (mitoma -ito).. .He then played kamada dan endo as double pivot on attacking 3-4-3 formation. Literally they played 5 attackers at the last 15 minutes of the game.. (Ito-doan-minamino-mitoma-asano)

Excellent analysis. I should point out that the halftime/second half changes in not only personnel but formation and tactics are not some improvised plan they drew up at halftime. Moriyasu has been carefully plotting a 16-man strategy for every single contest (which makes sense given how deep the Japan NT is these days). I think they were hoping that the hard press and tight formation would allow them to keep Germany scoreless for the first 45. If they had been still 0-0 at half time, you would have seen Kubo and Maeda off for Minamino and Shibasaki /Morita, and Japan would have gone to a three-DMF 4-5-1. As it was, Japan had to make a more attacking change. But the changes are all part of Japan's strategy, which is to let the opponent develop a certain style and mindset, as well as (hopefully) use up their energy in the first half. Then Moriyasu makes his five changes, and you try to win the game in the second half. By using pressing players up front like Maeda and Ito, they WERE successful in forceing the German midfield and defense to do a lot more work than they usually do in the opening half. That was the game plan. The problem was that they could not hold the ball up well enough in midfield, so Germany had almost constant possession [on this point I think Kubo is a huge liability. He just cant hold the ball under pressure. Id give Soma a chance against Costa Rica]. Ideally, the plan is to make it to half time either 0-0 or 1-1 (Maeda or Ito getting a breakaway). Then you bring on the likes of Mitoma, Minamino and Asano, who can run at the defenders, and take advantage of their tired legs, and you shift to a new formation and style of play. This is a basic part of Moriyasu's philosophy, so you can expect to see substitutes continue to play an important role.

1st half Japan played out of character and try to be defensive when they are not a defensive team. They were lucky 1st half not to concede 3 goals from Germany being un clinical. 2nd half Japan came out played how they always play and worked for them. Japan can beat any nation on the planet especially when you don't put your chances away. This is only an upset if you look through the lens of European elitism. Japan has beaten top European teams and South America before so its not hard to believe Japan won. They also held my Brasil to a 1 goal and were quite unlucky in front of the net. Japan has a strong league football culture in Jleague which a lot of their team is J League based. Also majority of J League is Japanese and Brasilians .As Brasilian managers and players have had an big positive effect on the development of the J League. Saudi on the other hand is an upset because Saudi isn't known to do well in any group stages of the cup history and their league isn't strong culturally. Japan should have no problem with costa rica. But when they play Spain they cannot afford to come out and play defensively or they will get passed off the field and lose.

so instead of just trying to play their way, Japan actually applied a versatile tactic that only works against Germany, similar to what Saudi Arabia did to Argentina with the offside traps, this time Japan put all the trust on Tomiyasu to cover the defensive line because of how narrow Germany attackers were, so that Japan can go forward with even more intensity.

Japan is much better team than Saudi. Japan attacked much better. Japan Vs Germany is not all one-sided as Japan keeper had an exceptional keeper. Going 3 at the back saved Japan. Within 5 minutes of getting Tomiyasu on the field, they were able to string more than 3 passes together. From there, it was a case of fresh attackers being brought on to run Germany into the ground. Japan packed the penalty box with bodies, and one rebound goal was the final straw that broke German morale. I regularly root for Japan at World Cups, and I think Moriyasu's got enough maturity to one day try managing in Europe. It takes bravery to admit that plan A has failed. He did it.

*constructive feedback * Hi, I really enjoy your videos and have been following you for two years now. Proud of you for upgrading to the tactics board. However, one thing I’d improve is the pitch geography in relation to your position animations explanations. I’ve noticed you explain everything with both teams spread on the whole board while the photo you show afterwards is for example in the final third or in one half of the pitch. In this case the team in possession’s CBs wouldn’t be in their own half, rather they would be past the centre spot. Hope that makes, it’s just that pitch geography is always important in understanding pf the importance and relevance of the information given. Comes from an UEFA B licenced coach. Take care👍

Thank you FMS for making this video, and that too so quickly! So based on this video and what I've watched, my observations are: 1. Gonda is the new Ochoa. 2. World Cup is the time when your tank doesn't matter but quality does. In the last quarter of the game Japan was more adventurous and their valor was rewarded. 3. I felt it was a tactical mistake to take off Gundogan and replace him with Goretzka. Gundogan is better at holding the midfield and dictating the tempo. 4. Maybe Japan intentionally played a laid back game upto 65 minutes, then they unleashed the young energetic attackers. 5. Germany, playing with wingers and wing backs, could deliver quality crosses, but lacked a proper striker to attack it. They miss Klose. 6. An xG higher than the score can mean one of the 2 things - either your team lacks clinical finishers, or the opponent GK is exceptional. I observed both. 7. Gosens and Hoffmann deserve to start the next games.
@felixkeck8565
@felixkeck8565 Жыл бұрын
Gosens is not even nominated. I think Germany needs to change the back four to Raum, Ginter, Rüdiger, Kehrer and replace Havertz with Füllkrug. Having a proper striker is so important, you can see at Bayern that having one unleashes players like Musiala and Gnabry, because they then get the free space which a proper striker creates through his physicality. If you look at the last chance of Germany of Goretzka, you can see how Füllkrug created the space and the opportunity for Goretzka.

In short: Germany played 5-lane in first half while Japan had 4 defenders so Raum is always free. Japan switched to 3/5 back in second half. But Japan having the players to hold their own against Germany in a man-to-man strategy is key. Tomiyasu held the back line together, Mitoma wrecks havoc in front. Of course the Bundesliga players are very familiar with their opposition as well.

What model you mined you xG from, though? I looked Opta and it shows 3,8 vs. 2,06, without the pen would be 3,01 vs 2,06. If you look at Opta's model, it significantly has different perspective, disregarding the penalty. The Japanese have 2 high chances (over 0,50) and 1 mid-high one (0,46), while Germany have only one high-chances (0,52 from Ruediger), but Germany have 3 medium chances (0,30) and loads of low chances (about 1,41 worth of low chances). Taking probability in, it would actually mean Japan vs Germany was almost a close match with 2-2 draw would be somewhat fair result. I think your analysis is spot on in giving the picture that Germany have a dodgy backline at the moment. Spain is definitely going to take note on this and they probably will use long-ball more as a backup strategy when they press high. Ferran Torres could bite them again and it would be pretty funny if he does. 😅😅It could end catastrophic again for Germany...or Busquets could be the weak link and vice versa.

There are too many key players who are just recovered from injury or still recovering that affect them not able to player the formation they are accustomed to. I don't intend to over- criticize Manuell Neuer, but he made both of Japan's goals possible by his reactions ; the first by pushing the ball into the penalty area after his brilliant save, instead of knocking it wide, away from the danger zone (he actually did this twice, but was lucky the first time when Japan's second shot went wide), and by kneeling down instead of standing tall, thereby blocking the goal with his whole body when the second goal was scored. He also turned his left shoulder away from the Japanese player, instead of using it to block the shot. Obviously, both full backs were at fault pertaining to the second goal, but Neuer obviously thought that the second shot was going in low, not high as it did, into the net.

I would disagree with giving Flick 7 points. His substitutions were very poor, his failure to react to Germany's clear defensive struggles are incomprehensible to me. I'd give him a 2

Japan counter is so good and nice finish. Meanwhile Germany has superior tactical but has 0 finisher in the team apart from shooting by Musiala and Gundogan. Also if u wanna beat Japan be like Belgium team last world cup. Abuse crossing since Japan player are short and its a treat to see Belgium comeback last world cup although lost to Brazil next round

Moriyasu's brave decision got returned. 3-6-1 (2nd half system) is the most favorite system Moriyasu used in J-league and CWC before the national coach. However, using this system amazed Japanese fans because he barely used this system after the national coach. The system change allowed the press more organized, and Endo could focus on the ball hunt. 6 attackers played so comfortably under this system. Tomiyasu's appearance was also important. I believe Flick did not expect this system change.

The main criticism I have with the way Germany played is that it was too slow. Yes, they controlled the game, but only with mostly meaningless possession far out from goal. There was not enough urgency and aggression to move the ball forward and take advantage of players skills and a numbers advantage when the ball was moved into new areas. Germany tried to push more players forward, leaving them vulnerable on the counter. I also believe subbing musiala was a mistake. Musiala was able to receive the ball and continue forward into dangerous positions. He kept the attack going, not just resetting it constantly. Plus his footwork and skill brought more dynamicism to the German attack.

Flick lost the game when he dropped Hummels (who could have complimented the offense playing the famous libero CB like Lothar Mathus) and should have given Scholtterback the offensive responsibility instead of Raum, because he has overall better stats on crosses and connecting with attackers either through direct mid-range crosses or far post front cross breaking the backline offside trap with Gnarby, also Musiala should have be the pivot in the front instead of Havertz, having better driblling and ball control in tight areas. Sule, covered the offside for Japan's 2nd goal a rookie mistake for someone playing at his level. With all that said, Japan came ready, prepared and executed and won.. congrats to Japan.

Flick was outsmarted, but not outclassed. He needs to pick better XI like HAVERTS was USELESS, he should’ve dropped into False9. Müller works best with a traditional striker.

Moriyasu used to be heavily criticized because the Japanese people(mostly non professional) thought he was underperforming. A Japanese youtuber called Leoza criticizing him very heavily from a tactical standpoint wasn't helping at all. (Although Leoza isn't a first rate manager himself as he can't even win a 4TH DIVISION AMATEUR LEAGUE) At this point in beating both Germany and Spain, Moriyasu might have been playing the "foolish manager" all along

Now tell me an analysis about CR and Japan about their statistics... Why a weak team beats a huge team like Germany and then loses to another team that just got beaten 7 to 0 against Spain... Sure there is an interesting hypothesis about that right?

germany played there cards wrong. alot of chances were created but the players that were in those positions werent clinical. why is gnabry out on the wing as a traditional wingback? why is havertz at center forward and why wasnt sane played. Also why didnt they play sule centrally and let kimich play that role and then have havert in midfield beside ilkay. japan is good but if germany continue like this, they wont beat spain.

Hansi Flick has shown once again why he is not good enough to manage a top team. Don't think he has a clue on how to break compact low block defences. Germany were going central each time they had the ball instead of stretching Japan's defensive lines.

i m a great germany fan but their game is very slowed down and lack of creativity. their moves are very slow and predectable.and no counter attack at all. most of their passes were horizontal and backwards rather than forward.and if you dont follow basic elements like speed and passes then all your tactics matters nothing.japans winning goal came from one to one players and no player from germany reach in goal area in time
