This midfield was spectacular. But from another angle. The fact that the support cast for Barca's midfield trident had deadly forward players and great fullbacks, it just made it harder to stop them. The same midfield had another great support cast in the national team when you collate the array of midfielders Spain had at the time. Had the national team have better forwards and fullbacks, they could have dominated national team football a whole lot longer than they did. This was the midfield to have. They made all the right support cast blossom.

In terms of raw skill on the ball/intelligence, they were certainly the best midfield of any team I have ever seen. However, what I found impressive about the classic Barca side was how they complemented these geniuses with a host of excellent team players to balance out the team: Alves, Mascherano, Pedro, etc... were all vital as well! It seemed to me that in later years, the quality of these 'secondary' players was often not quite up to the level of the 2010-2012 era.

Xavi was a player who never sprinted in the entire game but was always the player who traveled the most km in the game. That explains a lot about his game. On the right side he always occupied the area that the team needed. If Busquets was under pressure, he went down to receive. If Messi went inside he supported Alves on the right. If the forward went down to receive, he unmarked himself into space. He knew where every player was located in the entire game because he was continually scanning the game like a computer. He is the player who best understood Guardiola in his entire career, all with a physique, let's face it, very poor, he managed to be one of the best in history. He transformed a generationall team into the best team the history of football have seen.
