I remember a fair amount of QBs used to play with a variant of that “amateur” level face mask like Mike Vick, Colt Brennen, Troy Smith and Tyrod Taylor all come to mind. Always thought it looked pretty clean with a visor. Seems to have declined in popularity the last 10-15 years. Definitely adds weight but has kind of a boba fett vibe.

Schutt helmets and face masks, imo, are beautifully designed, while Riddell seems to be on a mission to create the ugliest helmets and face masks in football. All safety issues being equal (and they are), I have no clue why any player wears a Riddell. CD Lamb switched from a Schutt to a Riddell in 2022 and his game-day look plummeted. I know it's all subjective, but I cannot understand, if comfort and safety are equal, why any player choose to wear a Riddell helmet.
