If he takes it in his stride and pushes back, then he's probably strong enough (in body and character) to have your back. If he whines and bitches and shows weakness or runs crying to somebody else to fix it, then chances are he'll do the same when you need him to come through for you.

When I was a kid back in 1984 when this movie came out, there was a kid that I was best friends with named Tony. He took me to see this movie, and I had an awesome time I was born with cerebral palsy and was confined to a wheelchair still am to this day, this friend Tony never really cared about the disability and took me to see footloose. I felt like everybody else who just wanted to get up and dance and enjoy a movie. It was a great experience, a great memory and that friend and I are still best friends today, so when I see footloose, it reminds me of a wonderful time in my life where I wasn’t a disabled person I was just a person, it was a great time and a great film!

Amber, you and Jay asked if towns actually banned rock music and dancing back in the day. Well, the fact is that this movie is actually based on a true story of a small American town that in deed had banned dancing. And much like in the movie, the local high school kids fought back and eventually won the right to be allowed to dance. I’d have to Google it to find out the exact town and when it took place. I think it was in the 1970’s somewhere in Texas, but I’m not 100% sure.

This movie is loosely based on a town right here in Oklahoma called Elmore City. It's near Paul's Valley, about halfway between OKC and the Texas line. Most of the movie is fictional, but the part about dancing being outlawed and high school students petitioning for a prom is true. The outlaw on dancing was an effort to cut back on heavy drinking. In 1980, my cousin was a senior in high school in Elmore City, and she was part of the (successful) effort to lift the ban on dancing so they could have a prom. Her dad was mayor of Elmore City at the time, and he helped the cause. It made national news when it happened, which is how Dean Pitchford (screenwriter/songwriter) caught wind of it. Every spring, the town holds a Footloose Festival, complete with a street dance. This year it's on April 22nd. I bet you all would love it!

And behind everything was the soundtrack of the 80's, the greatest decade for music! Yay! So glad you watched Footloose! Great soundtrack, definitely makes you want to dance, especially by that final scene. "LET'S DANNNNNNNNCE!" 🎵🎶 And I know Jay had a little laugh during Ren's "dramatic" dance and gymnastics by himself in the warehouse, but I have to say, when I was an angsty kid and saw this film, that scene really resonated with me, lol! Just that he had an outlet, somewhere, by himself, where he could fully express himself and let out everything he was struggling with and feeling, like when you're a teen and sometimes you don't feel heard and you just want to scream... I understood that. 🙂 But yes, the scene's a little cheesy. Good music, though! And his moves were kicking butt. 😉 I think what I love about this film as well is the father-daughter relationship, because it was really complicated, but they didn't make the father into a buffoon or completely unreasonable. I disagreed with him, but at the same time, he had his reasons for being afraid. He had his reasons for not wanting kids to get into situations like his son had been in, and it made him a little over the top. But in the end, he did recognize the issue in that, which I'm so glad about. And he has that great line about how as parents, they're supposed to teach their kids responsibility and trustworthiness, but how are the kids ever supposed to learn to be trustworthy, if they're never given the chance to fly free and be independent and take on responsibilities? I also love Ren's speech to the school council about abolishing the dance rule, and using the Bible to speak the reverend's own language. And it's funny too - he's like, "In the Bible, what did David do? ... (looks down at the book) What *did* David do?" Like, umm... give me a sec, I need to double check what it was so I can make my point, lol. 😄 But in the end, it was eloquent, and even though he didn't convince them yet, I have no doubt that his words stuck with the reverend and gave him something to ponder for a while. Anyway, so glad you both liked it! It's a fun one! And makes you want to get up and dance. 🎉🎉 Let us know when you're going to have that 70's / 80's party. 😉

The movie "Scent of a Woman" (1992) stars AL Pacino as a blind retired lt. colonel and Chris ODonnell as a prep school kid he hires to accompany him on a trip. The very last scene has a powerhouse speech by AL Pacino, who stands up for Chris against the school board, who is going to punish Chris for not ratting out his fellow students.. (Chris is a scholarship student and not one of the "rich kids."with a powerful daddy.) Great great speech! AL Pacino won best actor, and the film was nominated for Best Director and Best Picture.

When this came out, I was in my car waiting to go in the theater. At the time, “Purple Rain” was out, too. I saw a schoolmate come up to me and say, “You’ve got to see Footloose first!” I did, lol. I was footloose at the next PYC (Private Youth Club) party 😂

This movie ACCURATELY shows what happened in my little Arkansas hometown in the early 1970s. One School Board member was quoted as saying, "Trying to have a clean dance is like trying to have a clean pig pen." Yes, that really happened. My older brother wrote and delivered a moving speech to the School Board, and they let us have our homecoming dance. This movie is entertaining, but it is also a very good depiction of what was happening all over small farming towns in the '70s. John Lithgow played the preacher in Footloose.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned, but Denise Williams sang “Let’s hear it for the Boys” The mom was played by Diane Wiest which you saw as the mother in The Lost Boys. She is also the mother in Parenthood.

Great movie! Saw this my sophomore year in a sold out theater on Tuesday Dollar nights in Spring 1984 lol Three years later the preacher played the head vampire on Lost Boys and The preachers wife played the mom on the Lost Boys. I still have my Footloose Album. Glad you reacted to this classic.

You speak the truth about the 80s and more social. I remember being young and at big town dances with everyone's family. Adults dancing , smoking and drinking, kids running around! Great times! No cellphone! But then, drinking and driving laws changed along with insurance stuff. Events like that came to an end.

There was over a dozen of us who saw this in the 6th grade when it first came out. I remember we all walked to the theater to see it. It was a blast going there, watching it and coming back. Back then yea we all just hung out a different places, houses, and did things together in groups as kids. Almost every kid in the general few mile area knew each other. Computers and game consoles only just started to appear but we all still did things together. The 80s were just a very social time for kids.

This was filmed in Utah and the my grandpa had a small farm by the Lehi Roller Mills the place where they have the dance. The views of the mountains are always spectacular here in northern Utah. Adam Lambert just put out an album of cover songs and he has Holding Out For a Hero on it. He does a fantastic version and Bonnie Tyler even said she liked what he had done with the song.

Great reaction, guys! We booked the 80s Cruise for February 2024, so we'll be doing a lot of dancing to the 80s! They have a good lineup for next year. We really had the best music back then.

Another fun dance related movie from the 80's you may enjoy (your daughter too) is "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" with Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt. Its more of a chick flick, but its a fun flick that is also a classic. It will definitely make you smile and make you laugh.

I was in high school in a very small town back then. A group of us wanted to see this, not really knowing what it was. We all got together at our friends house. Her dad was the local Baptist preacher. She was legendary in how she kept him out of the room where we were watching the entire time. :). I really don't think it holds up, but it's a good memory.

Loved how y'all talked like this town was so backward and foreign to your views. The funny thing is its actually based on a true town about an hour south of you down I-35. Elmore City Oklahoma. My car broke down there long ago and it was like traveling back in time. I spent Saturday night there and visited the church on Sunday morning. My grandfather arrived in the afternoon to bring me parts and a few extra tools so that I could repair my 1967 Ford Ranch wagon and get back to my work travels. Oh by the way, the real life kids in the town successfully lobbied the town council to lift the ban on dancing in place since the 1800s and got their prom.

Yes people were more social back then due to a alot of factors, especially in a small town. Tech isn't always your friend. Did go to a local restaurant in our family's old stomping grounds this last weekend. It was packed, everyone knew everyone, kids running around, and it was not unlike the early scene at the diner. Almost brought me to tears to see that still happening it at least a few places.

Agreed. I think older people got the better end of the socializing deal. In fact, we were told to get out of the house and find something to do.

I moved to a small town (more of a village). Kids riding bikes, everyone knows everyone, walking by people eating offer you up some food. It's so different but a real nice change. Also includes everyone knowing everyones business and talking about everyone else but I think the benefits outweigh the negative

My friends and I were obsessed with this movie when we were in High School and saw it in the theater a half dozen times and we wore out a tape of the soundtrack in my friends car. The movie is loosely based on Elmore City, Oklahoma that didn't allow dancing until the early 1980s.

I've always loved this movie. The first time I saw it in the cinema, the whole audience did exactly what you guys did at the end... clapped in appreciation. When they did a remake, I managed to watch about 20min and then stopped. It just wasn't the same and didn't have the same vibe as the original. I feel the same about the original movie A Star Is Born with Kris Kristofersen and Barbra Streisand. Footloose is loosely based on the town of Elmore City, Oklahoma. The town had banned dancing since its founding in 1898 in an attempt to decrease the amount of heavy drinking. One advocate of the dancing ban was the Reverend from the nearby town of Hennepin, F. R. Johnson. He said, "No good has ever come from a dance. If you have a dance somebody will crash it and they'll be looking for only two things-women and booze. When boys and girls hold each other, they get sexually aroused. You can believe what you want, but one thing leads to another." Because of the ban on dancing, the town never held a prom. In February 1980, the junior class of Elmore City's high school made national news when they requested permission to hold a junior prom and it was granted. The request to overturn the ban in order to hold the prom was met with a 2-2 decision from the school board when school board president Raymond Lee broke the tie with the words, "Let 'em dance." In 1981, Lynden, a small town in Washington State, passed an ordinance that banned the practice of dancing at events and locations where alcohol would be served. This incident received national attention. And since this event happened only years before Footloose was released, the local residents believe that these two things are not a coincidence.

Technically the Streisand Star is Born is a remake. The first time A Star Is Born hit the silver screen was way back in the year 1937. The early Technicolor film was directed by William A. Wellman and starred celebrated actress Janet Gaynor opposite Fredric March.

Seriously Amber & Jay, I love your movie reactions. I thought yesterday was Monday and I was so disappointed when I realized I would have to wait for today to see your newest reaction. 😆😆It was worthe the wait though! I totally dig that you're diving into so many 80's movies, and this one was iconic! More 80's movies you need to watch: Weird Science, Heathers, Gremlins, Good Morning Vietnam, 9 to 5 (with Dolly), Labyrinth (with Bowie), Spaceballs and Xanadu (with ONJ).
