I don't know anything about dressage tests but I was impressed by the fact that Ember has never done anything like this, is not that familiar with the cues you have to give him and he is such a quick learner. He seems to have picked it up rather quickly and didn't panic or really get flustered. Very impressive little horse. I can see why you bought him. He is just a darling!! I love his way of barely touching the ground when trots with his little toes going out so daintily.

Lucy, this is just the best advertisement for OTTBs. Ember was so chill and engaged. And he showed off his potential under your guidance. He seems to be a solid all rounder. Excited to see how you develop him.

What a fantastic first test on Ember, Lucy. As you say he is a very styling smart-looking pony. His extended trot was so energetic and I love the flicky front feet too. I think he is going to win you loads of rosettes as he gains experience and strength and relaxation with you. What potential this pretty boy has. I can't wait to see you soar on him. Just, wow.

“But it’s fine this is totally normal, you’d expect them to have a little look around” As the judge mentioned tension, I see a really tense and sensitive horse in Amber too but he is doing his best for you. I love to see thoroughbreds getting a new career and following the journey. About green horses being tense the first time taking them to a new place & new assignment/discipline. I want to normalize actually doing proper preparations & training aka groundwork & steps to do while riding to establish a actual calm and relaxed horse that loosen up mind and body and trusts the handler/rider and is - trained to relax by doing exercises. - teaching relaxation exercises to utilize when the horse tenses up or as preparation and maintenance to use anywhere effectively while riding and on the ground that are done to loosen up the rib cage ( where the tension is ) and lower head that relaxes the horse in an honest way and not just containing the nerves, tension and worrying. It’s also preferred to take time to introduce the horse to its environment by foot before riding because it makes the horse feel more confident than having to experience new things with the rider on board especially if it’s a green or young horse and has no one on the ground to guide. I really like the riding otherwise, just wanting to point out that Amber(As a green riding horse) is clearly tens in his mind and body, has not been taught relaxation before but it’s easy to manage once specifically doing training to teach relaxation, maintaining relaxation and having tools to use when needed. Just by riding a horse forward and staying quiet and off the horse as a rider isn’t always enough to actually teach your horse true relaxation and confidence. That’s more like hoping a tens horse calms down and doesn’t panic, freeze or explode from sudden or gradual overwhelming pressure from environment, extreme tension in body until having the rider and saddle on is too much and claustrophobic and dangerous situations get to happen if the horse never learns to calm down with time and repetition. And why wait on it and not just go straight to training on relaxation before anything gets to happen, before going away to a new environment with a new task ahead, by not addressing the problem before it’s a real problem if it has potential to become dangerous. Trigger stacking is common with horses that get tense, never learns relaxation and get really worried or explosive if not helped. Hopefully this gave a helpful perspective on how to prevent tense horses and how trying to manage tension is not always teaching relaxation. Learning more about how horses learn, horses personality traits, body language, positive reinforcement, science based training methods and how to train your horses from the ground is very helpful when establishing what and how you want to train horses. A Tip - Teaching relaxation is best done from the ground first at many different places and while lunging before ridden.

What a cutie! In the warmup, I would have been tempted to let him canter off some of that tension to see if it would help settling him into the more focused trot work...or do you feel that would just turn on his "racehorse" mode and be counterproductive? It was nice to hear from the judge's comments that they clearly saw the potential in Ember that you do!

I guess you can teach a horse to have nice movement, but boy this one has such natural symmetry. He is just pleasing to watch, his movement and his leg length to barrel size give the impression of a much taller horse...he is just a very nice horse, what a find you have made. Was it just camera angles or can he be a little short in his front left at times, im sure it could just be camera angles.

Ember had such even pacing and looked so handsome in the ring. I really hope he's going to develop the star quality that you feel he has. I think he's going to be awesome. I can absolutely understand how proud you were feeling of him and how excited you were for his future. Last year at his first ever show, one my year old Leonberger boy swept the floor with the competition in what was a big show and won Best of Breed among other things. He came home with 9 ribbons and half the points needed for his championship. I was so proud of him and I was feeling pretty much the same way I can see you feel about Ember 💖
