Route Planning using Basecamp and Garmin XT. I place waypoints at every intersection and if selecting a gravel section, maybe one in the middle of the section. My avoidance and speed settings are the same on Basecamp and on my XT; both use the same map. Then when I transfer to the XT there is no difference when the XT calculates the route. I also set the proximity to 50m so that if my point is not exactly on the road or I am a few metres away it will accept the point as being passed and not try to route me back because I missed the mark. Routes tell me how far I will be riding that day so comparing that to the range shown by the bike, I can accurately decide where to refuel - no unnecessary stops or fear of running out. I use tracks where there is no road marked on Garming Streetmaps but that is not often. If you are forced to deviate you are not assisted to return to the track. If you change your mind and add or remove a section of the ride you can't change the route on the road.

Do you ride jeep tracks often? We use Trax4Africa. Its a great map overlay in Basecamp and Garmin. Try it for all those wayward offroad adventures.

@@PierreBreytenbyes I do use T4A and it is often useful for smaller trails. It’s important to have the same map in Basecamp as you have in the XT or else it may route differently when you are actually riding it. Mostly the CN maps have all the trails now as the quality of the aerial photography improves. Imagine the quality coverage we will get when the whole country is covered by drone footage from a few hundred metres up and really accurate location data.

Everyone gets the engine braking wrong for the AT. Look at the manual, mine on page 146: "Level 1 has the strongest engine braking effect. Level 3 has the weakest engine braking effect." As you said, the higher the blue line, the more interference from the computer. Therefore 1 is normal engine braking (no interferance) , in 3 the computer will allow a bit more throttle in order to reduce normal engine braking. But I (and many on the internet forums) have found it makes no difference at all! I also set my Traction Control to the Favourites button (*), so by pressing it I can reduce the traction from 7 to 1 and cycle back to 7 again depending on the road surface conditions on the fly
