How/Why? Travelling to New Zealand, to some viewers, may seem odd particularly for a long weekend. Let's' put this in perspective.
It is quicker and closer to fly to New Zealand than it is to travel to Melbourne or further afield. Not long after the Boss and I moved to the Wide Bay we regularly visited new Zealand for "long weekends". A matter of economy and we always enjoy the visits and exploration of New Zealand.
Now, this trip really arose because we ordered a custom push bike cover from a saddlery in New Zealand and because we had unused Qantas flight credits we needed to use.
We flew into Christchurch arriving on the traditional mid night flight (such a terrible time). We then travelled to Dunedin to catch up with some mates; travelled north to Blenheim; flew to Auckland and drove down to the Coromandel Peninsula and spent a couple of nights in that area.
The train trip was with Driving Creek Railway. The main track is 2600 meters long with 15 gauge. The steepest grade is 1 in 15 and there are plenty of switch backs and spirals used to gain altitude. The rail travels rehabilitated rain forrest and was started in 1973. It was not until 1990 that the track was opened to the public.
My second video of this trip has us finishing our trip at a world famous movie set not too far from Auckland. It was, quite surprisingly, very interesting. Moreado for that episode next week :)
