The reason it is a positive 8 is because the quadratic formula is using the coefficients after the negative has been factored out.

Just curious. Will nurses ever use this type math ? I just wonder what is the purpose?

Will a nurse need to find these characteristics of a quadratic function? Probably not. What is important is the logical structure behind the mathematics. Nurses will deal with math everyday, as they have to use things like ratios, proportions and percentages when caring for patients. As you can imagine, it is very important a nurse get dosages correct. Having a good, logical understanding of how the may we are doing works helps us confidently make calculations and allows us to deal with situations where things are outside of the 'norm'. While the specific math concepts one is learning may not be seen again, the underlying thinking is what is being developed.

What if you only have 2. My problem is f(x)=-5x [squared]+10x

It doesn't change any of the processes, you just c = 0. You can still factor it to -5x(x-2).
