Intriguing story drawn from Leo Tolstoy's own life about an old peasant seeking a small coin for food, but who has been derailed by a "single" word he used and which derailed his life with the authorities in Russia.

Incarceration is not an excuse to neglect and abuse. It is important to adapt to be honorable in whatever life or the losing of life does to you.

This author has a knack of attracting the downtrodden His characters walk out of their hut, & WHAM, they immediately get engulfed by them

Could someone explain how one can LAY DOWN on the oven to sleep? This is mentioned often in these stories .

In China they sort of did this. It was made of bricks

The oven was brick and a few feet high and large and people could lie on it. Actually a very good design and dual purpose for cooking and sleeping in cold climates
