It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on KZbin are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

I probably shouldn't say this but I had work done on my airstream ( roof reseal, repack bearings,etc) at Windish RV in Denver with payment and comfort thinking it was done right but unfortunately wasn't done at all. A BIG HEARTFELT THANK YOU FOR VINNY for doing it. According to Vinny the above mentioned wasn't done at all.

This was the first time I got o see Vinnie. I have heard all kinds of good things about him. He seems like a good human and is very good about maintenance. We are getting to roll later this week and I inflated our tires to the 80 psi on the tire because I had my mind changed by others who say it says 80 for a reason. I agree with Vinnie. I have to let some air out and go back to 65 psi, where I have always had the tires, based of the weight of the trailer.

If you over tighten a a screw and it starts slipping, you can get some wood glue and tooth picks. Glue the tooth picks into the the hole. When it dries you have a spot you can redrill and rescrew. Even works with residential entry door jams that been through quite a few slams.

I can appreciate those points about a travel trailer experiencing 'an earthquake' when you go a traveling down the road over time. Thus the need to tighten (not over tighten) screws, wheels, etc. Your video demonstrating the belly pan rivets loosening, I had not considered. So that was good info. showing sometimes even rivets need replacing. Talk to me please about the difference between the 2 types of rivets, Bucked and Blind rivets. Also what have you learned about 'lifting brackets', raising the Airstream about 3". I understand Airstream does Not recommend these, though owners complain they ride low, and that it is problematic on rough terrain. Thanks, Camper Frank, Lynn, MA.

I can't believe I just caught this video so long after it was posted. Thanks so much for this, all of the Airstream answers that I needed, and confirmed my questions about air pressure. I'm running the same tires around 70 psi so they reach 80 when they heat up, good thing that is correct.

That would be awesome. We should be relocated to Huntsville the middle of April. We would love to meet you both. We just bought a Rockwood 24 foot bumper pull as a starter RV. We are excited to take it camping in the south as there will be so many places to take it. Southern California is so crowded and not a lot of good places to go and none are reasonably priced. We plan to retire in Huntsville . I thought it was cool when I realalized you are home based in Alabama. The wife and I love your videos so please don’t ever stop making them. I’m 58 and the wife is 54 so we will be retiring in about 10 years and we are so tired of all the BS in California. We flew back to Huntsville in November to look around and look at houses to buy. While in the Airforce we lived in Texas and Louisiana and we feel more at home in the south. We could not believe how much less houses sell for in Alabama . Well I don’t want to bore you but we are now loyal loloho followers. I’m going to get the wife and I some of your T-shirt’s and that will make it official LOL. Take care and thank you for taking the time to respond.

#6= get an accurate weight at scales and compare with GVWR. Check each axle load and compare with axle rating and tire inflation. You may have some upgraded 16" TIRES But most Rv makers skimp out on axle rating and tire. Moist tv's need to run max sidewall tire press rating. Your^s is an anmoly. Uslr you air up to max to pressure max psi on tiffe.

If you strip out a screw, remove Take the head off of a large kitchen match, coat it with wood glue and insert into the screw hole. Wait a half hour and put your screw back in, nice and tight. When I was working as a mechanic, we torqued the lug nuts to spec before lowering the vehicle, then rechecked the torque after lowering the vehicle. I was dismayed to learn that most new trailers come with so-called "lifetime service less bearings." I have had bearings last well over 300,000 miles with annual inspection and packing. I have found few of the newer type going 100,000 miles without replacement, much less 300,000 miles. Thanks for the info for a newbie like me.

Since you're doing this video from the PNW where it starts raining in the fall and doesn't stop until late spring, another important maintenance tip (at least in the PNW), is to keep your RV under a breathable cover during the raining season. Otherwise, your RV will grow an amazing amount of mold! Thanks for another great video!

Hey There - I live in the PNW as well and it’s raining here right now lol What I do is put a dehumidifier in my trailer. It’s on a timer so it doesn’t run 24/7 lol, and I have a piece of tubing for it to drain through. Works excellent and is almost maintenance free. I use rodent traps underneath the trailer. I lay the traps on long pieces of cardboard so I don’t have to crawl way underneath to place and/or maintain them. Inside the trailer I use a combination of devices and substances to help keep bugs and rodents out or dead. Cheers mate and happy trails

Advice from a tent camper that has owned a RV for one year. I bought a 14 FL from Travel Lite. It had a big sticker on the window that said two year warranty. With in a year the porch light stopped working. I called my dealer and he was out of business. I called Travel Lite and they said you only have a few more days of warranty. I said it hasn’t been a year yet. They responded with we don’t know who put the sticker from Travel Lite on your new camper. Our warranty is one year from DATE OF MANUFACTURE. Not when you buy it. So if you buy their trailer 4 months after they built it you lost 4 months of warranty. I couldn’t even find a dealership that wanted anything to do with Travel Lite. They no longer make my trailer and I heard the company is in trouble. When buying your first trailer you need to know you will probably be lied to. You need to somehow know the reputation of the dealership. You need to know travel trailers are made from a lot of very cheap Chinese parts. And you will be scalped like you’ve never been scalped before. For example my Dometic freezer door hinges just broke. They are junk and look like they would cost a few cents to mold. The spring casing is $30 if you need the spring $15 more and the other half of the hinge on the door is $20. The hinge in my opinion is made to break. I fixed my own porch light so expect to do a lot of your own repairs. If you can’t heaven help you stick to a tent.

Thanks for the tips, but I have a question. Vinnie showed how you should check the screws for being tight, using aa screwdrivr but when he was tightening the tables inside, he used the driver like he said not to. I know why and how, being a retired mechanic, because you get a real feel for the tools, and he adjusted the amount of torque the driver delivered, but the average person might not. I love the tips Vinnie shared.

FYI, I spent 50 years in the forest products industry. Back in the 1970' I was buyer at a Georgia-Pacific Distribution facility when G-P was (but no longer) the largest distributors with over 160 warehouses in the U.S. & Canada. There are two types of wood commonly used in the manufacture of plywood, western woods like Douglas Fir and southern pine plywood, originally invented by G-P. Avoid the Southern Pine plywood, use the western ply wood because it is more stable, less prone to de-lamination than the SYP (southern Yellow Pine) If possible use actual exterior grades of plywood, CC, AC etc. and avoid Interior grades like CD even when they say Exterior Glue. OSB (oriented strandboard) is a chip board that is prone to swelling, along the edges when it gets wet. When wood is to be left exposed to the weather, like the underside of your trailer, prime and paint it before allowing the wood to be exposed to sunlight, otherwise the paint will crack and peel. The more sunlight exposure the sooner the paint will fail. Never wash the bare wood with bleach or harsh cleaners or they too can cause paint to fail. Thought you would like to know these things.

You can use a screw gun as long as it has a variable torque setting and you set it so it stops where you want it. If you are in doubt on how to do this, don't use it. Sil glyde is great stuff, it comes in small packets for brake jobs and also in aerosol cans. I use it for all sorts of things, in the shop, on the truck, on the trailer and around the house. If I get a boat I'll use it there too. The large tube shown will last you many years if you aren't using it as part of your day job. Two or three brake job packets is more than enough to have on hand for most situations.

If you have a sealant that's loose or peels off it must be stripped off. This roof was last sealed in 2012 and was in fairly good condition. I was able to clean it up and reapply directly over and it will be good for another 5 years.

Hey Kristy! I would love it if you posted a video about what you bring, beauty wise, when you travel. I always wind up bringing way too much makeup and I would like to scale it down for traveling in my RV. Especially since we are taking longer trips now. I would love some tips and tricks about that. So, what’s in your makeup bag?!

Thanks for the tips. Vinnie did tell us how much to torque lugs nuts to? Also lug nuts need to retorqued after 100 miles FYI
@vinnielamica8704
@vinnielamica8704 6 жыл бұрын
Torque is specific to the wheel studs on your trailer. In this case they are 1/2" studs and we torque them to 110 ft lbs. A retorque is always a good idea. One of the biggest reasons for a retorque can be improper original wheel install which we tried to demostrate here.

Thank you very for this Video, I love to listen to Vinnie's expertise. Would you set the same tires at 65 psi for a single axle Airstream ? I Just had installed These Michelins 16"

All good advice. Really an enjoying your videos. One question that you may or may not know the answer to: Why is he using LT tires on his RV? They are really not constructed for trailers. While they may look a lot more durable, they may not be the best choice, particularly because the sidewall construction is not designed to handle the vertical loads seen on trailers. High quality ST tires (Special Trailer) are usually the best choice, especially so with larger, heavier trailers.

Any time you mount a wheel to a brake drum, use "Anti-Seize" on the mating surface so they do not fuse the dis-similar metals.

So he said in the video he would not inflate to the max for your size trailer, and I am assuming it is based on gvwr. He would inflate to 65 psi vs the max 80 psi on the tire. How did he determine the tire pressure of 65 psi should be correct? So as not to heat up above the max yet provide support on your weight.

Loved this video, great information. Do you always use the same airstream dealer for your checkups. This guy is great. Have you had good maintenance experiences with the Airstream dealers? The place we bought our trailer is terrible for getting anything fixed on your rig. I don’t have confidence in their work. We have a Flagstaff micro lite trailer. I am seeing and hearing on you tube that people are having problems with dealers doing warranty/maintenance work on rigs.
