Hi Bridget. Try loosening the nuts on top of both spools to free up some ribbon. Tie them back on and flip the little metal 'tuning fork' back the other way. This should reverse the direction of the ribbons. Once you've used it all the way in one direction, you can just flip it again to go the other way.
It's tricky to tell from the picture, but I think something is making the ribbon too tight and this should solve that.
