This makes me so sad, because this friendship Evan sings about is so simple and sweet. And a lot of what he sings about is just feeling comfortable with someone. Inside jokes. Aimless talking. I think a big message of this play is that people (evan included) tend to focus on romantic connection as the place to find validation and fulfillment. But there are so many different relationships that can give you this. I think Evan starts to really heal when he starts valuing the relationships he already had. He already has the girl who sees beyond the broken parts of him, in his mom.

I have both my parents and two brothers. The only problem with that is that my ol brothers are perfect in their eyes and then there is me, stuck in the middle. AKA the child who does nothing but wrong cuz that's all they notice. I don't have friends I can talk to and haven't truly smiled since my parents started fighting alot. He is telling to Connor's parents and sister what happened, and their friendship and kind of gets into too much, so much that he persuades himself that they were really friends. Also, Evan tried to kill himself, and it's like of Connor was with him and found him, maybe everything would be different. But there is dialogue I'm pretty sure on stage.

Say what you want about this movie, it wasn't perfect by all means. But Ben Platt's voice is fking *angelic.* He's the only one who can actually reduce me to tears with his voice. I remember watching this movie in the cinema and crying like a baby because this song triggered some kind of mental montage of me and my best friend throughout the past 10 years. Just remembering when we first met, the laughs we've had, seeing the best and worst parts of eachother's lives, and how far we've both come now. This song helped me reflect on how much I value him. I'm very lucky.

Except that this song breaks my heart because it describes the perfect friendship and it's all just a lie... It also breaks my heart because theoretically he sings about his friend he lost. I had 2 best friends who kind of became enemies of mine. It was maybe everyone's fault, but I kind of feel like they just left me and my other 2 friends because we weren't cool enough for them. That's not the point. The point is the fact he sings about how he could imagine going on for forever with his best friend, but lost him is exactly how I feel. I imagined our whole life with our friendship; us 5, the group nobody thought could break. But it did. I imagined us meeting on university when we have time, talking shit about our professors, guys who made us disappointed, family dramas. Inviting each other for our weddings, having fun. Meeting as mums, taking little breaks from our regular life and just talking, discussing everything, sharing our secrets with each other. But this won't ever happen. I believed until January 2020 this script will play. Now, 3 months later I know it won't. It won't go on for forever, our friendship wasn't for forever. I miss our old days and the hope for this future.

That feeling you get when you realize that Evan's line about climbing the tree was actually based on his own attempt at suicide. Nobody was there for him and this song, despite the fact he's lying to Connor's family, could be interpreted as him fantasizing about having the one thing he never got; A real friend. Anyone who could've waved back at him from the window. For all he knew, Connor might have been that person if he lived further. All he can come up with is what he thinks other people want to hear. This song's lyrics, as opposed to the others in the show, are more on the nose and less metaphorical, because Evan's simply bad at lying and he isn't really expressing his real self or emotions here. Only an imitation of what he thinks a perfect day may look like. Except he doesn't have a real friend to share it with.
