I rode a WR450F with a street legal kit a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head with this video. Not that power is everything, but hands-down that WR450F was the most powerful dirt bike I've ever ridden.... ;)

Here in Australia the Wr450f comes street legal from the factory and it is the second most popular bike in the whole country behind the bike all our postman use and it is just amazing with all the road legal gear I think it’s not even a kilogram heavier and you can ride it on your learners

funny, I was thinking the same thing. keep the wr450f the same exact way but make a dual sport edition of it. The performance of wr450F with drz400 maintenance would be unbeatable and something honda or someone should give us. I would not mind the extra weight for "exploring" nice video and trails!

Just completed the dual sport mods to my 2020 WR450F. Will be enjoying CO, UT and AZ in June. Sold my ducati MTS to get a more off road lightwight and reliable machine as it could not tackle many off road obstacles last year. Super pumped. Ordering soft bags, luggage now..

Hello friend, you may want to do Arizona in March unless you plan on staying out of the deserts, staying above 6000’ or don’t mind frying an egg on your helmet 😏. The deserts from November - early April are excellent.

Hi Will, I have been having fun with my new bike. I put the lowering links on during hurricane Dorian. The bike shop did the forks for me. I needed 3 inches to feel confident at 3/4 feet down. But its a light bike so I can move it around fine now. I did get a light aluminum carrier for my truck and needed help loading it. With time I might be able to load it on my own. I did take it off road on flat grassy trails here and Lets say I was only going slow but I was fine. Maybe enduro bike designers will start doing some lower bikes with a 450cc engine... that would be fun in the future for many of those who want to start riding and are not soooo tall !

I ride a 2014WR450F. I love the bike. I am lucky I live in a state where it is street legal. But I agree its need a 2L oil capacity, turn signals, and a 6th gear. It would be the perfect 50 state dual sport. Its performance on the trail and track in insane.

The CRF450RL is already the bike you are describing. To make a WR450F into a dualsport it would be detuned to meet emissions and weight would be added for the street capable bits. In the end it would be nearly identical to the already awesome CRF450RL.

Wr 450f service intervals are a lot better than crf450l Also 450l less hp less torque So 450f IMO is a better option

@@jdh8835 Yeah, they look badass! I’m concerned about the 5 speed tranny but people say it’s WIDE. So big open fire roads shouldn’t be a problem. I think the Honda’s 6th gear is a little bit taller than the 5th on the WR. But yeah, if you live in a state where you can’t legalize a dirtbike, just buy the CRF and pull all the emission crap off.

YES! YAMAHA HONDA OR SOMEONE DO THIS! so essentially the WR250R not the F but make a WR450R but probably with performance of the F. Probably wont happen though because of all the emissions crap. if the WR450F had dual sport maintenance, I think I would just keep this bike as my do it all one.

All Yamaha would have to do is make the wr450r with the performance of the 450f, the maintenance schedule of the 250r, cap the engine so it meets or exceeds the emissions standards, the "someone" at Yamaha just has to "leak" a simple walkthrough on how to unlock the engine for full performance. It would sell like absolute hotcakes.

i converted my 450f and found the seat not great for seated road trips, and never could get the gearing quite right, I was either limited to 55mph where I had familiar HP and torque or doing 70 but also flat on its face mid rpm and under... the drz400 was superior for 50/50 stuff stock (felt like a better wr250r) ... but ultimately, I got an xr650L because my interest shifted to more road riding, then ADV, I was tired of ass fatigue, and now I have a Vstrom 1000 and the xr650l to fill the off-road void a bit... best bike combo ever.

I have got 450F 2017, great bike, very reliable. However, short service intervals might be a problem. Even if you change oil every 20-30hrs its still short. Other thing is engine rebuild, I changed mine piston at 150mth and it was a good time, especially timming chain (should be sooner). Conrod I assume to be around 300mth max, at 150mth it was a little on the loose site, especially piston pin and top conrod bearing. Its limiting for dual sport in my opinion.

Im super frugal with my money and prefer buying used like I did with the low milage 5 year old wr250r i own which I really like but I decided that once Yamaha releases the new wr450r i will go to the dealer and buy brand new, yes it will cost 12K but i'm okay with that. Hoping it will have over 45hp, a head light similar to the ktm500exc and 3.5 gallon stock fuel talk. Dont worry, I have a suspicion Yamaha is working on it now, they need to out do Hondas CRF450L, 2021-2022 awaits us.

To make a bike capable of handling the massive maintenance intervals of current dual sports (3000+ miles) the engine would need to be a lot heavier, the frame would need to be strengthened to handle long rides, the suspension needs to be heavier duty to handle longer times between rebuilds, etc etc. It's why most dual sport bikes are much heavier than their off road only counterparts, and also why light dual sports akin to the Husqy and KTM models have such short maintenance intervals.

I know I have the 350rr beta great bikes. They have good oil change intervals as well. but I feel these are more dirtbike-y than anything when I take mine on the road

@@RWWRENTAL That's where the 500RR-S comes in ;) I won't argue the WR450 would make a good dual sport, because the added weight and forgiving nature of the suspension would be better on streets than the racey nature of the Betas. But man the Betas shine on the trails, as you know.

@@RWWRENTAL the Beta has way better service intervals, but is slightly heavier. The Beta feels more narrow between the knees, and in my opinion more comfortable ergos. The KTM has kind of a snap off throttle, where the Beta seems to be more midrange. Definitely keep your eye out for an opportunity to ride a 500 RR-S when you can. Doubly so if you can demo a 2020. Apparently they got the dual injection of the race editions, and reworked the weight distribution 😍

DRZ400 with a factory fitted 6 speed gearbox. I don’t even think it needs EFI if it’s running an FCR39.

I like where you are going, but I am starting to feel like the new KTM 690 Enduro R fills the niche you are describing nicely. A little heavier, but no too much, all of the off-road capability most of us really need, a lowerish seat height and an even lower seat available, and improved street performance that makes it difficult to beat. That’s what I am looking at these days. Have you checked it out?

I just got the 701 and this fills in a lot of gap! im going to be making some opinion videos on it! but it feels light on the trails! currently put some bar risers and all that stuff and ill be testing its capabilities in Colorado at least in 14k elevation. took it on highway at 80mph and does it like nothing and my good buddy has the 690 and going to compare those 2

No way! The wr450f is one hell of a bike lol I know a dude changes the oil once a year lmao! And had it for 10+ years. Says never broke down never done maintenance and has tons of down low grunt. Makes me want to get rid of all of my bikes just keep this one lmao. I just made this for fun video it would be cool if they made a wr450f or wr450r dualsport edition. My buddy lend me his wr450f and even with short gears it hit 80mph with more to give lol

@@agent0444 the crf450L is a bit more mellow than the WR450. both are very capable bikes. if you plan on doing more trail hops and longer distance on the street I would get the crf450L. if you mostly do forest roads and double wides that are pretty basic the crf450L. maintenance is also better on the crf450L by a little. if you are a mix of cross country, enduro single track and very little trail hops wr450F is an awesome low end torquey machine

Not gonna happen, if they make WR450R it would be considered too heavy because longevity=stronger(heavier,thicker) materials. You got the CRF450L and they made the best that can be done now to keep it light and make the top end last for 32 000km by the book.

yup! 20k miles on a crf450L is already a really good deal on a performance dual sport. But yeah essentially you are right. it is fun to think about though. for now, my 701 enduro has to do ha ha. lets see what the future has in store for us
