Exactly. Why can’t Honda put out their rally 450 they use for Dakar or a toned down version without the ridiculous maintenance requirements. They put out a new crf250F, which is a new FI XR.

You nailed it. I feel guilty riding my XCW 300 on easy roads. Every mile I ride that’s “easy” is a wasted mile on my KTM. That’s why I’m looking to get a DRZ, so I don’t feel guilty about exploring some forest and BLM roads on a high performance machine. Glad to hear someone else feels similar. Thanks for the video.

Got back into the dual sport game after 18 yr absence. Bought a used 2020 KLX 250 with 1300 miles on it and loving it so far. Yes it’s a bit underpowered, but I’m 52 and want the lower power so I don’t get into trouble. I’m about 300 lbs with gear, bike is handling that fine over off road conditions. I just don’t try to jump it. Big pot holes it handles fine. Seat sucks so I have a Seat Concepts seat ordered for it. So far a skid plate is only other mod but planning on a Yoshi exhaust and fender eliminator. Having a blast riding the forest service roads of varying difficulty here in VA. No regrets so far. Looking forward to couple overnights in woods come cooler weather.

All reviewers prefer the Honda, except "stock" suspension. If you're leaving the bike bone stock, the Kawi comes with better suspension. Neither offroad like a motocross bike, or enduro bike, and neither come stock with suspension like that. The Kawi does have better suspension according to everyone who reviews them, they prefer everything else on the Honda. Including looks.

So can you tell me something >> > When was the "E" version sold in the United States? Most are in Australia & I think if I were to buy a DRZ400 I'd really want the "E" version. More power & from what I see I'd like it more. I mean if ya wanted a SM model you can get the "E" and get the wheels you wanted. It's a win/win deal but I didn't see it on Suzuki site. peace

So I've just asked someone WHY they had two radiator coils on their DRz? Only to learn that the "E" version comes w/ the 2nd cooler for the bike. That might explain additional HP but that I don't know for sure. As I look for a 1st bike I saw this 400E version today but I do not see them offered by Suzuki. Interesting anyway, thanks for the video

Yeah, I've dropped questions on other vids of yours now... ty for answering & I only learned today of this "E" version which I like better already. I'm saving for a dual sport & have 2-3 more months but I've got a list of bikes along w/ all the possible mods & their prices that I'd want on each bike. I even how weighted that list as to how feasible it'll be to get those mods done after I buy. I want to know what I'm in for after I buy as well, since I've got the time to know all that upfront. Yep, Suzuki doesn't mention this bike so it's discontinued in the States. Well, if I happen upon a used one at the right price I might snag it b/c I do like this one. Better than the other DRz's.

I like the extra low end power my KTM 350 has especially since I went to a larger rear sprocket. One issue with this bike is that you need to be at least 6 foot one to ride it based on the higher seat position. I replaced the stock seat with a much more comfortable and softer seat so I can ride all day on rough trails and roads and not get tired. This bike has been extremely dependable and I've owned it for several years. I never even noticed the AI voice over but did think the voice sounded a bit like a sissy.....

Yes another comment lol. I had ridde. Quite a few bikes like you. 300 two stroke carbed and FI. The bike I was able to tractor through the best, for me, was a FI yamaha xt250. The only thing it couldn't handle was deep sand hills and stuff like that. I never did hard enduro stuff like 5 miles of hell. But I did single track with it and stuff like the other you showed in your video. I didn't need the power to go the same places with guys who had better bikes with the same or less experienced riders did on actual dirt bikes. The suspension wasn't as good, but I could still manage. For four strokes FI is the best over carbs. I found it stalled very little once I learned how to ride offroad, compared to the bikes I got after.

I had the '24 KLX 300 dual sport and it did everything I asked of it. I was a newbie and I put that bike through the ringer, crashing, hard, nearly every ride as I seemed to have no fear. The bike took it and kept running. It was a great bike for me to learn on. I ended up selling it and getting a Beta 300 and a GPX TSE300R which I love both but I've progressed to a point in one year that I think I could ride the KLX 300 on most of the stuff I ride today. Sure, a little heavier but for what I typically ride, it would work fine. Such a great bike and it's far far better on pavement than the 2 stroke Beta and GPX.

I had a KLX250. It was a great bike. I don't even remember what year it was, but the only color available was the KAW-green. It was a good bike, but at that time I was living in central Florida. Riding in the summer time, the bike's engine would ping due to extreme high ambient temperatures. That was the only thing I didn't like. So I ran mid-grade fuel and the problem went away. Then I bought a new DRZ400SM, did the 3x3 airbox mod., bought a full Yosh.-exhaust, and ordered a needle and jet kit for the carb. Now that bike was actually quite fast after I did those few mods. I also installed a manual cam-chain adjuster too. Both the Kaw and Suzi were very reliable. But the Suzi was more of a blast to ride. It was a beast for being only a 400! Kaw, Suzi, Yam, and Hondas are all great bikes, and I would buy no others. Leave the Euro-bikes to the Yuppies!

I have owned both, I currently have the 500. Here are my thoughts after thousands of miles combined on dual sport, light weight adventure bike trips and multiple BDR's. The Honda is the better high speed bike, if you're going to be riding open country at speeds in excess of 50 mph then I'd take the 450L/RL. Its heavier weight, better 'stock' suspension and aluminum frame make for a better handling and more stable bike at speed. The motor in the Honda makes better power on the top end especially when uncorked with a ECU and proper exhaust. Beware the flame-out issue is a real thing but there are multiple solutions to improve upon that. The KTM is the better single track/two-track enduro focused bike, think woods riding and speeds under 50 mph average. IMHO, the 500 makes better bottom end power of the two and that's more usable at slower speeds and in technical terrain. It's the lighter bike and by quite a bit. The 500 has the better brakes and clutch, no debate there. I don't find much difference in way of comfort from an ergos POV, I ran Seat Concepts seats on both bikes. The only real noticeable difference here is in regards to the vibrations felt, the Honda is the clear winner there as the 500 is a vibey SOB. I found no difference in terms of reliability, both bikes have small little nags but they are both very reliable and dependable. The dealer network might be slightly better for the Honda but the aftermarket is much better for the KTM. Resale on the Honda is pretty bad, there are tons of '21-23 MY lightly used bikes with less than a 1,000 miles on them sitting for sale for months at $8K where the 500 from 10 years ago still brings $5-8K with 10K+ on the clock. If you want to spend very little on aftermarket accessories and upgrades then the Honda is the better out of the box bike, it simply needs less. If you like to farkle your bike and don't mind dumping some money into it to make it better for you personally and to take it to the next level then the 500 transforms into the better bike overall. But stock vs. stock the Honda is the better purchase for those that want to simply swap tires, slap on some bags and go adventuring. The subframe on the Honda helps immensely in this department as it can handle more weight on the tail safely. At the end of the day these are the two best bikes in the class and you can't go wrong with either one. That said, the 500 is still the king but the Honda is definitely a very, very close second that is more readily available and cheaper overall to purchase and maintain. I'd be happy to have either one in my garage but the 500 takes the cake for me personally and that's why the 450L is gone.

Naw…. I ride my DRZ400S everywhere, I’ve been on knarly trails, hill climbs and down hills, it can do anything I want it to, been deep in the forest and deep into the desert. Hasn’t let me down. A little heavy sure, adds to the nice adrenaline dump at the end of the ride I say.

The motors share the bulk of the same DNA, but are offered in completely different states of tune. Their seat-of-the-pants experience is akin to Jekyll & Hyde. 400&E models vs S/SM motor differences: 400&E have a lighter weight machined crankshaft that further compliments the free revving over-square bore. 400&E have a thinner head gasket and thus run a higher compression ratio 400&E cam shafts shift the motor’s torque profile further up in RPM to maximize HP. The S/SM cams maximize idle and partial throttle torque for street use and “dank woolies” None of the DRZ models have a cush drive rear hub, but the S/SM motors have a spring mass damper on the counter balancer drive gear that adds flywheel weight and damping, further smoothing low rpm behavior, at the expense of some additional noise. 400&E models have a 39mm flat slide pumper carb that favors mid to top end power, S/SM have a 36mm CV carb that favors off-idle torque and fine throttle control. 400&E models have a 1mm larger exhaust header pipe and a comparatively free-flowing muffler. 400&E have a more aggressive ignition map that in combination with their compression ratio requires the use of premium gas. That’s just the motors..the chassis differences throw even more wood onto the fire. 😮

The DRZ400?? The original ‘00-‘04 kick start only, 40hp fire breathing, off-road missile? Absolutely not. The stump-pulling DRZ400 “S” model on the other hand?…..(steel gas tank and cap, E start, battery, bar ends, locks, full lights, mirrors, pillion pegs, full subframe) no more heavier than any other factory dual sport of the same displacement and capability. Problem is, folks blur the line all too often when a legit dual-sport shows up in group ride with a pack of dirt-only bikes….and people start swapping machines, which instantly draws comments about weight differences.

@@davydtolyarenok3704 Yeah my balance is fine, when you are trying to go up a slippery slope and not able to reach the ground sucks when your bike can go forward anymore and it slips out from under you and you nail your head on the ground. Even with helmets on you get a concussion. I have had too many concussions already, and have had almost died once after hitting my head when I passed out once, while doing things that require a helmet and dirt bikes, I don't need another one just because I can't reach riding on terrain where balance means nothing.
