She's like every single self-described "socially awkward" person I have ever met. Socially adept, super nice, charming, and fun. I think it's like the mental version of Body Dysmorphia, i.e. skinny people looking in a mirror and seeing an obese person. In the mental version, you aren't "seeing" (with the mind's eye) an accurate version of yourself. You see a worse version than the one you genuinely are. Maybe these people are nice like she is, because they are more attentive to what they are saying. In a world full of a-holes not thinking at ALL before they say something, people like her are normal.
@snailcage
@snailcage Жыл бұрын
You can understand and follow the rules of social situations while still having a difficult time doing it. I think the main difference is that it forces you to only be reactive in conversation, so you never actually play a role in the conversation or where it’s going, you’re just reacting to what the other person is saying and worrying about how that person is perceiving you.

Never worked for me. But one very useful trick that did work (at least in my case) was learning to focus entirely on making the other person feel good. Ask them lots of questions, make them laugh, be a good listener, then if you are concentrating enough on them it's difficult to also concentrate on how you are feeling. You don't have the free brain space to worry about both.

My parents don't understand how stressful and panicking going into the store is. I have serious social anxiety, and I really wish I didn't. People at my school think I think I'm better than them and that's why I don't talk to them but I'm so scared. Pe class is awful. I'm not bad at sports typically, quite good actually with family and friends only, but in public I can't at all. I get shaky, breathing gets tight, it's really scary. Growing up I never understood why until I went to a therapist and got diagnosed. I'm still trying to get better, I'm 16, and I recently was accepted as an assistant for a special eds program. I'm hoping I do good and it helps me improve. I believe one day it'll be better! Though, I'm still not sure how I even got it or if it's genetic, because my family are the biggest extroverts and social people. I still love people just as much. It's just hard for me. I did speech because my sister was with me, so it was a little easier, but it was still very hard. I'm trying to get better! Little steps with the people you love really help! Don't give up :))

Not really. You can spend a lot of time alone without being socially awkward. Unless you were training since like 4 at that level you probably had enough social opportunity to develop reasonable skills. Also many activities are fundamentally social, including martial arts so you generally learn social skills. Unless you're literally walking into a gym, fighting/training/practicing the entire time without saying any words, you're going to be interacting socially somewhat. Most people who are at the top of things are intelligent and reciprocal enough to be socially skilled. Now I'm sure a significant subset of fighters are socially awkward cause you do kinda have to be fucked up in a way to be obsessed with something like that (not criticizing it at all, it's a cool thing but that level of obsession is different). And I would guess that autistic people are overrepresented among fighters because of the technical nature of it.

You don't spend a lot of time on your own kick boxing, boxing and grappling. You'll become part of a big team and if you're training somewhere good, you'll spend a few years with a good bunch of close friends.

U not socially awkward, u not weird... u cautious with who u open up to and are very unique! Being different is unique and i rather have a world full of different unique ppl who are truly being themselves than a world full of regular ppl who try to fit in and blemd in knowing damn well they aren't being who they really are.

Some fighters are people who insist on never being a victim again. It's a victory outcome.

Oof damn, that line is mad relateable Personally, I learned to just compartmentalize my emotions and brain waves, but my nerves still fuck me hard. Create a facade that everything is fine, then try your damnest to believe it. I already liked Gillian before this excerpt, I admire her a whole lot more now.

Such a down to earth human. Maybe it's because I'm Canadian but I always love watching her fights compared to most women's MMA that is. Cool she got this chance be on JRE.

low key feel the same, I don’t compete nowhere near the same level as her but navigating a fight is much easier than some social interactions. boxing you have set rules and techniques you stick too, social interactions are just chaos
