So happy to see my main Highlander here. I didn't expect him to be as historically plausible as you pointed out. I always assumed he was a beefed up version of the romanticized Highlander, which he still is, but seeing that his weapons are somewhat inspired by other existing ones from nearby cultures is nice. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is baffled by the fact that he lacks any proper options for the classic "highlands claymore" with quillons look (I am referring to the great sword, not the basket hilted sword. Apparently even though this usage is technically incorrect, it has become widely accepted due to how widespread it is.) I really wonder what his new armor will look like and which direction they can take him, considering Aramusha, Shaman and Centurions new armors all brought something new to the table.

The definition of claymore is controversial but the reality of the situation is that the meaning has shifted, it is correct to call a 2 handed Scottish sword with forward sloping quillions a claymore by the modern sense of that word, much like how decimated doesn't mean to destroy 10% of a thing anymore. In addition words like great sword, arming sword rapier and side sword didn't mean the same back then as those words do now. Amazing video as always!
@Gamer_Dylan_63 жыл бұрын
The mercenary explanation parallels what we know about the Highlanders in lore, so coincidence or not that's cool. Also if it's not a coincidence hes probably only wearing leathers to fit in with the Vikings and is probably the second most heavily armored of his faction to make up for that.

By the way, the sword actually IS a claymore. Skallagrim gets this wrong, too. Granted, it's actually the lesser-known claymore because, historically, they weren't all that popular. This particular sword is called a "claidheamh-mòr" in Scottish Gaelic (pronounced "clay-ev morr"), deriving into "clay more". On a side note, the Gaelic pronunciation of "claidheamh" actually sounds a lot like the English word "cleave". Rather fitting for an anti-cavalry weapon.

I think the term "Claymore" still fits. Why not? That's what the sword is culturally, and you can distinct the two with "claymore" and "basket-hilted claymore". Claymore is just the englishified word that means "large sword", isn't it? Well, the Claymore is a large sword. Not a greatsword, but certainly in the middleground between a longsword and a greatsword, and they were often heavier than longswords. Most people in history didn't use the terminology we do. They just called everything a sword.
