that's called a zone attack. all heroes have one (when the warlord does that attack with the blue trail, that's warlords undodgeable zone attack). you press the light attack and heavy attack button at the same time. basically a stronger light attack for most heroes (keep in mind it also takes a big chunk of your stamina on some heroes) but there are different variations depending on the hero. i was actually just as confused as you when i started the game because i don't recall the tutorial teaching anything about zone attacks.
