I like both versions, with lyrics and the instrumental. The words seem to sound like an ending. But with the movie the instrumental sounds like there are new beginnings on the verge of happening. This song was popular when I was about 15 or 16 years old. A kind of turning point in my life. Maybe that is why the instrumental version speaks to me the way it does. But the lyrics are truly beautiful but sound like an ending of a love affair.

Its here on KZbin...just search "love theme from St. Elmo's Fire....David Foster is such a talent love his music. He had a special on PBS with the original artists (where possible) singing his biggest hits. i watched it in March of 2011 on my local PBS station. His songwriting is unparalleled.
