Gosh, so many judgey, know-it-all people in these comments. Yes, everyone knows the key to weight loss is calorie deficit rather than a certain food composition. Look at Yoonah's body, that woman knows how to maintain a certain weight. But she also knows regulating intake would be very difficult for her child. Remember that Min is on the spectrum and taking medication that increases his appetite. So Yoonah is going for low calorie substitutions (shirataki noodles, seaweed, and a research-backed method to decrease calories absorbed from rice), rather than serving him smaller portions of regular food. Your diet methods will not necessarily work for everyone, and especially not someone with Min's circumstances, so stop lecturing Yoonah as if she doesn't know her own child better than anyone else does.

Not really, if she really understand, she won't make him fall into that obese state, of course she needs advice, who said she couldn't reduce the volume? She could, but need to be done moderately, you serve it in little by little servings, don't serve it all at once, also she needs to avoid preservative food, child with autism spectrum sensitive to that kind of food, and she needs to get him do more exercise, just light exercise like walking around complex would be sufficient

People don't realize how hard it is to make someone with Min's condition lose weight which is probably made even more difficult by the side effects of his meds. My brother is like Min and everyone judges my mom but it's really hard because you can't make your kid eat something they don't like and you can't control them. Most people judge my mom but when they really try to step in and "help", they realize that my brother isn't so easy to "fix" and usually move on. It's a slow process and most suggestions outsiders have, caretakers have tried before and they didn't work or they have a reason for not doing it. Yoonah is doing her best and people should know it's usually more complicated than most people think.

@@nanaprincess2537 It is a long term process to take care of children with autism like Min. It never ends sadly and it also depends on the severity of autism a child has. I work with children on the spectrum so I understand food tolerance can be an issue. Some clients I work with are resistant to trying any new food and it’s taken a year or more to get certain ones to eat more food choices. Some only eat junk food and can’t tolerate textures, taste, smells, ect that they’re not used to. I’ve had a client try new food and could see his tongue “quivering” when it touched the food. It’s something new and kiddos on the spectrum prefer routine and familiar. I think what his mom can do better for next time is to cook the food early in the morning if possible before he’s awake or while he’s doing other things. Other KBS shows show parents and adults cooking for loved ones before they’re awake, so it’s not a problem that she has to cook everything on camera, she can choose better times. I think that would help because he would be awake, hungry, and food would be ready. Next time do not cook him sausage. That shouldn’t have been an option (giving him sausage before she was done cooking). She can definitely make him sausage and should to go with the new foods but it should’ve been the last thing to cook so he doesn’t get upset it’s there and he can’t have it and she should offer it with the new foods. By providing him the food he likes on its own, he will be full and have no incentive to try the new food and may just walk away. She said he moves around a lot so he gets sleepy after he eats, since she knows him best she should incorporate that and not feed him yet. Also you should always keep an eye on them and not turn your back on a child with ASD. All children are different because it’s a spectrum disorder but I’ve found from working with the diverse group of clients I’ve had, it’s not a good idea to look away because things will happen. She also said he knows how to get his own rice if she doesn’t offer it. She should consider moving the rice cooker to somewhere he cannot teach. I do food tolerance programs with my clients and we always have new food and familiar food offered simultaneously. We don’t introduce more than 1-2 new food items with the familiar food because that can be overwhelming. My clients won’t even come to the table if they see new food items sometimes. Or they’ll throw the new food across the room. I have a client who wants to eat food all the time, asking for food several times a day. He’ll take a chair to the food cabinets and try to reach up to get food. We have locks on the food cabinets so he can’t get in. He throws tantrums and can get very upset, eloping from the room, kicking and hitting toys, and ect. But we don’t give in to his tantrums because that’s teaching him tantrums will get him what he wants. Also it’s not time for food, he follows a schedule of snacks and lunch that he follows everyday so he understands the schedule. When clients get upset like this, we sit with them until they feel better, prevent them from trying to hurt themselves (some kiddos headbang when they’re upset), others, and property damages. It’s called extinguishing or else we redirect their attention to something else like offering a toy they like instead of the food. I think she gave in too easily to his request. You can acknowledge the request but you don’t have to follow through with it if your plan is to introduce a bunch of new foods (really it should just be 1-2 new foods at one sitting). I don’t watch Min so I don’t know him or his mom but watching this I saw things she could do better to have her child be present to try the new foods and decrease her frustrations and stress. Many times we try really hard to get a child to try something we made that took a long time and they won’t even look at it. We have to learn to brush it off because it’s not us but them we’re trying to work with and help teach life skills like eating healthy. It’s never about us but about the kiddo because whatever we can teach them now is what will help guide them to be independent and live a high quality life. No hate on her as it’s challenging to juggle so many things (doctors orders for diet foods, researching diet foods, cooking diet foods, Min tugging on her to feed him, cameras in front, her own feelings, and ect). The above are just things she can consider incorporating and my experiences and what’s worked with clients I’ve had on the spectrum.

Yes, I know it's true that it is calories in and calories out, but as a person who has struggled with their weight for a long time, It is easier to consume fewer calories overall if most of your food intake has higher protein and fats and fiber, because they are satiating. It is commendable to see this mom making such efforts to re-create healthier versions of recipes for her child's heatlh. The Konjac noodles are a genius twist.

I've heard that cold rice has fewer calories here for the first time, too. So, I searched about it a little. The results I find are mostly from 2015 and like this: Scientists say they have found a way to make rice less calorific - boil it with coconut oil and then refrigerate for half a day before eating. According to Sri Lankan researchers, treating rice in this way reduces its calories by up to 60% (from BBC News). Then there are some websites where it's written uncooked cold rice can be poisonous and this method is dangerous. But I couldn't find any scientific information about eating cold rice or something similar. So, I think it'd better not using these kinds of methods without asking an expert about food.
@Chill_Jill

@@sweetorange5938 The true science about calories is related to the concept of Calorie Density. Calorie Density is determined by taking all foods and determining it's calorie/pound (weight). You can eat any quantities of food with a calorie density of 500-600 calories/pound and less and have a very hard time gaining weight and a very easy time losing weight. These foods are vegetables, fruits, beans and yes! Grains, too!! Including rice and potatoes. It's the animal products, meat, cheese, eggs, oils, processed sugar and processed foods that keep us fat.

I’m just surprised they didn’t use a children’s nutrition expert since it’s a public show, there should be a responsibility to only show professional health advice. It’s important not to use fad diet trends for kids, that can be really dangerous for their long term health in avoiding disordered eating.

Yeah and it could very easily lead to malnutrition since a lot of people don't know what they need. Also it can be dangerous because of the ketones which can increase acidity (so I've heard)

Increase raw fruits and vegetables, cooked vegetables, whole foods, potatoes, grains and beans and lots of water. Eliminate all animal products (meat, dairy and eggs), oil, salt and sugar, sugary foods, soft drinks and processed foods and fried foods. Then he won't pass out after eating and will more than likely drop weight faster than you can imagine and have an abundance of natural energy. The way he is eating now, he is at risk of getting gallstones, fatty liver disease and a whole list of health issues.

Her recipes look delicious but her food science is a little off. Chilled rice mixed with oil doesn't have less carbs. Go for brown rice. Honestly, it's better not to overeat even with the right foods, and take snacking into consideration of food intake

An undergraduate student at the College of Chemical Sciences in Sri Lanka and his mentor have been tinkering with a new way to cook rice that can reduce its calories by as much as 50 percent and even offer a few other added health benefits. The ingenious method, which at its core is just a simple manipulation of chemistry, involves only a couple easy steps in practice. “What we did is cook the rice as you normally do, but when the water is boiling, before adding the raw rice, we added coconut oil-about 3 percent of the weight of the rice you’re going to cook,” said Sudhair James, who presented his preliminary research at National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) on Monday. “After it was ready, we let it cool in the refrigerator for about 12 hours. That’s it.” - undoubtedly it needs more research ahead... But nothing wrong with trying new method as long as it doesn't harm our body.

Give them a break. He lies on the spectrum, it’s probably difficult for any young kid to have that sort of restraint, much less somehow who has difficulty just processing the world around him. He would probably be fairly distressed by a normal diet. Cold rice also starts developing diff starches compared to cooked rice. The body doesn’t absorb it as well, leading to fewer calories absorbed.

Weight loss happens when calories are lowered. Maintaining it happens when you make healthy recipes with limited food (calories) . Some of these dishes and quantity are too much, and avoid processed foods like sausages. And look at the sodium levels for bp heart health. I see so much sodium, glad they didnt add ketchup. And limit or eliminate the rice. Thats enough food for 4 lunches... and its fried, sodium and many calories. Its not good table set. Invest in low sodium low sugar low calorie cook books

She made food for the entire family not just for her son. And the sausage was actually chicken breast. Processed food aren't always bad, in fact some of them are better than "natural" food, although it might not apply here. She mentioned that the ingredients were already savory so she might not add as much salt. Almost everything she made was low in calorie. She couldn't make her son "eat less" since he has a condition so she had to modify with different approach. And eating lower calories doesn't mean eating very little as the method is very restrictive and unhealthy.
