Pacific mole crabs, also known as sand crabs, make their living just under the surface of the sand, where they're safe from breaking waves and hungry birds. Some very special physics help them dig with astonishing speed.

Among the surfers and beach-casting anglers, there’s a new visitor to San Francisco’s Ocean Beach shoreline.
Benjamin McInroe is there for only one reason -- to find Pacific mole crabs, a creature commonly known as “sand crabs” -- and the tiny animals whose burrowing causes millions of small bubbles to appear on the beach as the tide comes in and out.
McInroe is a graduate student from UC Berkeley studying biophysics. He wants to know what makes these little creatures so proficient at digging their way through the wet sand.
McInroe hopes that he can one day copy their techniques to build a new generation of digging robots.
-- What are Pacific Mole Crabs?
Pacific mole crabs, also known as sand crabs, are crustaceans, related to shrimp and lobsters. They have four pairs of legs and one pair of specialized legs in the front called uropods that look like paddles for digging in sand. Pacific mole crabs burrow through wet sand and stick their antennae out to catch bits of kelp and other debris kicked up by the breaking waves.
-- What makes those holes in the sand at the beach?
When the waves recede, mole crabs burrow down into the sand to keep from being exposed. They dig tail-first very quickly leaving holes in the wet sand. The holes bubble as water seeps into the holes and the air escapes.
-- What do birds eat in the wet beach sand?
Shore birds like seagulls rush down the beach as the waves recede to catch mole crabs that haven’t burrowed down quickly enough to escape. The birds typically run or fly away as the next wave breaks and rolls in.

When I was a kid I always waited for the tide to recede at Venice Beach and stick my hand in the sand. You can feel them digging and it tickles. I used to love digging them up and watching them dig back into the shore.

I just came across these creatures for the first time in my life just yesterday. My friend called them sand fleas. (Heceta Head beach) But my googling has shown me there are sand fleas that can live in your carpet and then there are mole crabs incorrectly called sand fleas. There seem to be a lot of people confusing the two. There are websites talking about preventing sand flea bites and they show a mole crab. Mole crabs don't bite. They are getting misunderstood. Mole crab is called 'undur-undur laut' in Indonesia, or at least in Central Java, which literally means 'sea ant lion,' because both animals dig their burrows backwards. 'Undur-undur' itself means "(an animal which is) walking backwards." Oh, and mole crab tastes good too fried. LOL. But do not over consume it, it will make you dizzy.

@@amorphous1964 I read a review about eating mole crabs. It said that sometimes they eat the tentacles of Portuguese man or war, but that's only in the Atlantic. Furthermore, there are no studies showing any danger of eating mole crabs that have done this, and no warnings. But that's as close as I got.

As a person who lives in California, I can say that these guys are extremely common. Everytime my family went to a beach, me and my siblings (and maybe my cousins and friends) would dig into the sand just to find them. Good memories we had.

The video shot underwater is amazing. The sand makes it difficult to see what's happening when it's digging. Maybe if they can find some transparent material that has an index of refraction close to sea water... I found one of these little guys last year during a trip to the beach. I was looking for sea shells but I found something digging into the sand, so I dug it out... I've never seen this thing before. I took several pictures and when I was back at the hotel I did some research and finally found its name. Life is amazing.
