It is NOT full time 4WD, it is AWD. Huge difference but the Hiace has a center link that does not lock but allows the front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds as it goes around corners. A 4WD does NOT have that link and locks the two axles together. If you have 4WD on pavement, even the slightest turn on dry pavement becomes a wrestling match and produces HUGE amounts of tire squeal. Since it does not have these mannerisms, it is AWD, not 4WD. Otherwise, these are absolutely great 'adventure' vans with good ground clearance and traction off road. As an experiment, we tried to take one over the Rubicon. OK, not as good as a jeep and we only made it about a mile. Still, a great adventure.

It is a 4WD not an AWD it’s. Beefier it’s just electronically controlled via the ECU it has a beefy transfer case and beefy front and rear differential. The solid rear is equivalent to the Hilux surfs rear solid axle

​@@chevyls7189 OK, I looked it up. Yup. Full time 4WD and reviewers at the time noted it's difficulty to turn on pavement, which is the HUGE drawback on full time 4WD. Even in AWD, I often have to shift into 2WD to get my Mit turned around in tight quarters. The 1996 Hiace COULD be modified aftermarket with locking front hubs to make it a part time system, which would make more sense. The added expense made it something few have done. Thank you for correcting me. I think I like my Mit better. 2WD (hi), AWD (hi), 4WD (hi), and 4WD (lo) teamed with the Toyota truck transmission. The only lo spot being no neutral position on the transfer case, just like the transfer case on my 85 Toyota. But, if a long distance, wheels on the ground tow is needed, the locking hubs release the front, and it is VERY easy to unbolt the rear drive shaft in the Toy. Never had to do that (yet) but our 4WD club knows this to be an option (rarely see Hiaces in the places we get to, but they ARE very capable vehicles).
