The Edgar Allan Poe reference of the story of The Tell-Tale Heart about the beating heart underneath the floor of the victim murdered.
@noeyedgirl3 жыл бұрын
Also "a drunken jester's final words" is a reference to another one of Edgar Allen Poe's stories, The Cask of Amontillado.
@ajester49393 жыл бұрын
I think this is based on Edgar Allan Poe's poems because there's actually a lot of reference's just in the chorus alone I think that the knocking at the door is from The Raven and the count to ten part is from count the ways I believe there's a lot more but I cant remember them all
@twodinosaursinatrenchcoat3 жыл бұрын
@@ajester4939 I assumed that the knocking of the door was still referencing The Tell-Tale Heart. The protagonist of that story had just hidden the body, but there was a knock at the door because the neighbors had reported hearing a ruckus. The protagonist greets the police and treats them as guests before starting to hear the beating of the heart in the floor. The heartbeat agitates him to the point where he confesses to the murder just to escape it. I had always assumed that the very beginning of the song was a reference to that part of the story. Then again, it’s up for interpretation and I love the thought of it referencing more than one of Poe’s works within the first few lyrics.

I know "a drunken jesters final words" are from cask of amontillado which is by Edgar
@AMcGrath824 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's not just Telltale. Amontillado is definitely in there and "plundering hung up promises" is Robert Louis Stephens (kind of a mix of Kidnapped with Jeckyl and Hide).

Immediately Castlevania came to mind, Dracula's story in particular (just a bit different). I interpret it as the vampire being hunted down in his castle and he tells his wife to leave and save herself, so they say their goodbyes. However, they actually capture her first, "your cries become the wind." Then he pleads for them to let her go but his "desperate plead is left unheard." They then kill her in front of him, "then my contrived goodbye" signifying their goodbyes before were all for nothing, as it was unrealistic that any of them would be able to escape alive. Aaaand I just broke my own heart.

Just a moment dear I hear someone at the door And the beating of a heart That I hid beneath the floor They've come for me love Save yourself I am far beyond repair They will bury me alive But I'm not inclined to care I am too far gone now So dry your eyes and count to ten They'll have me on the pyre by then Forget the man I used to be You'll move a long more easily A moment dear I hear someone in the hall And the plundering of promises We hung up on the wall They've come for us love Save yourself I am bitter to the bone And I'm growing rather fond Of the wandering alone I am too far gone now So dry your eyes and count to ten They'll have me on the pyre by then Forget the man I used to be You'll move a long more easily Now I must finish what I started I'll write a symphony for the departed I have no time for second chances So I survive on bourbon, blood, and backward glances The scene begins Your cries become the wind A desperate plea best left unheard Then my contrived goodbye A poet's pantomime A drunken jester's final words Just a moment dear I hear someone at the door And the beating of a heart that I hid beneath They've come for me love Now I must finish what I started I'll write a symphony for the departed I have no time for second chances So I survive on bourbon, blood, and backward glances Dry your eyes and count to ten They'll have me on the pyre by then
