hay lionheart I'm right in the thick of my independent Satsuma playthrough. same settings as you and all that. I can give you plenty of tips and heads up. but if you see this now and before I start watching (sure you already know) but rush that gunsmith building in your capital province and definitely try and get a firing rang ASAP . It's best to pretty much make Satsuma your military city. Save building military ports in the two provinces to the north that have coal natural resources. you can work with a wooden navy until you research steel plating. save that navel spending until then and sail the oak. (or whatever they used in Japan) Secure your island as quickly as possible and don't loot cities so you can retain honor. make two more vassals and win heroic battles to build honor, your gonna need it for independence. After everyone is at war with you, you'll be able to loot settlements like a Kahn with Armstrong guns. don't invest too much in shin shushemi agents for spreading influence, you will just lose them when you gain independence. instead, turn them into temporary killers and disrupters and send them out with a preemptive bang before the big war.

If I'm remembering the Obama let's play correctly, the ironclads were okay because of their armor but they had few cannons and I think that the 21 gun Kiao Maru (Butchered 200) not only proved to be very durable but also had more cannons which resulted in them performing better for you back then. Oh and torpedo boats didn't seem to be worth the effort because they weren't super durable and the torpedoes would often miss, all for a considerable price. Lastly, there was a bug in your Obama let's play where you couldn't get what you needed to recruit your top tier troops because your trade with the west was disrupted either by an agent or something else. The best way to fix that is to not establish trade with the west until you're ready to recruit those troops and can secure it from enemy agents and hostile forces.

Since you plan on going republic, keep in mind that your imperial infantry will disband automatically as well as your Ishin Shishi agents. So perhaps relying on line infantry or black bear infantry (Satsuma's unique unit which is better than line infantry but worse than imperial infantry) until you go republic is a viable option. Yeah, allies and vassals suck in this game. You can't trust them and sometimes they switch allegiance to backstab you when you least expect it. But you can kinda predict it if they start moving their armies to your borders.
@francocontreras90939 ай бұрын
A good tip for future battles is that you can easily deploy firearm infantry behind each other in two tiers in FotS. One of the few games I don’t have to worry about friendly fire as long as the hill is steep enough.
@jammyjimmy6669 ай бұрын
Lionheart I have some advice as someone who spent a long time abusing certain game mechanics of FotS - naval bombardment is entirely broken as a tool to win battles. Use it, use it again, keep using it. Smash their toughest units with it every time whilst keeping your troops back so they have to march to you (giving you more time to bombard). Use in sieges to just obliterate their defences. Secondly - spread your rifle units as thin as they go every time to maximise the number of troops firing effectively. Thirdly - make use of flanking fire. Position melee units in the open as a bait, then have rifle units hidden (if possible) in the flanks with fire at will disabled. Wait for the enemy to engage on your melee units then wheel your rifle units to blast them from the sides and rear. Fourthly - cavalry are even more powerful in FotS than they are in the base game. Use your generals units (and other cav units) to ride down and roll over any distracted enemy rifle units you can get to (you don't want them firing at your cav as they charge which is why you want them distracted first). Fifth - always get the British. Don't worry about the others. HMS Warrior is a doomstack on its own its like the Black Ship but more scary. Royal Marines are also really strong even if not quite as good as the French unit. The Americans suck never get the Americans. The French naval ship sucks also. Sixth - as the Satsuma you have the ability to quickly obtain a powerhouse recruitment centre in your capital for maximum accuracy infantry. You don't even need to spend on line infantry when you can recruit levy infantry with massively upgraded accuracy, they're way cheaper to maintain so you can have huge stacks of sniper-quality levy infantry running around for pennies. Good luck out there I'm looking forward to watching this series.
@Rupertssons9 ай бұрын
I find it doesn't make too much of a difference which foreign power you choose. The American and French ships are worse than the HMS Warrior but you can get two of them, letting you spread your ironclads across multiple fronts. And the American, British, and French Marines are the third-, second-, and most-powerful infantry units available, respectively, so they'll still stomp anybody they fight.
@jammyjimmy6669 ай бұрын
@@Rupertssons depends on how in detail you want to go I guess. HMS Warrior is so strong that you can basically sit it with only 4-5 other ships and it can function as a navy. The French ironclad is genuinely terrible, you can beat it with a Kaiyo Maru. Same for the American ironclad, if slightly better. They simply aren't worth the recruitment cost or the upkeep. I would go so far as to call them a handicap. I agree that the foreign marine units are (by design) the strongest individually in the game. That's why it's worth it to try and grab the British, as the infantry difference is marginal but the naval difference is huge. If you're playing as a Shogunate faction and getting the British is difficult, then it depends on your playstyle - French if your land armies are your strongest focus, Americans if your navy is your strength. Just my opinion of course, but it's been borne out through years of playing and experimenting.

So about the HMS warrior, I've been in it and it's honestly huge. It was the first armoured frigate of the British navy and was also along with her sister ship (the HMS Black Prince) the first Iron-hulled ships produced in retaliation to Frances commission of the first Ironclads. Though she never saw combat and never fired her guns at any enemy targets during her service. She's still around, she currently resides at Portsmouth in the UK as a museum ship.

As you said, early-game armies in FotS have such a diverse collection of traditional and modern units, so these battles will require a lot of attention and micro to ensure the various types are all used effectively. The gun units have to stay safe and shooting, while the melee units have to strike at the right times.

I think that despite CA saying time and time again they could manage putting out a mainline Fantasy title & still keep mainline historicals coming too at the same time they actually couldn't. Hence why we've had so many SAGA titles, Thrones, troy and Pharoah with 3K being the only proper mainline title but that was a hybrid part Fantasy part historical. Hopefully they're next historical is a proper return to actual mainline historical content otherwise they'll really struggle keeping that part of the fan base imo.

little bit of topic question. Lionheartx10, when it comes to some conditions influencing the settlements in some ways like growth, number of inhabitants, religion, culture, what do you prefer? Do you prefer the way of Medieval2TW/Third age total war, basically it has influence on public order and on being able to train certain units only if specific culture or religion is present in sufficient amount, or TWRome, where if you recruit too many units from one settlements, you significantly cripple the growth of the settlement and you won't be able to upgrade settlements anytime soon, or Warhammer, where it's just corruption influencing just public order? And second question about diplomacy. I am not talking about the options in diplomatic actions, but about the options how to start diplomatic action. Do you prefer the old option, where you have to recruit diplomat and send him to another faction's settlement/army, or the new option - just discover them and then you will be able to do it wherever you want to?
@jamesthach25049 ай бұрын
Hey Lionheart, 1. Generals can still get bad traits by siting into settlements for doing nothing for too long and I strongly suggest you park them outside, Into the forest in Ambush Stances to prevent them of having bad traits like eyes for the Ladies or Likes his food. 2. 15:10 Please consider adopting that unrelated family member General you start with and this is not just a random General this is the Legendary Samurai and General Saigō Takamori that would personally lead the Emperor's Finest Troops to Victory in the Boshin War and also lead a Rebellion against the Meiji government in 1877 and died with honor. And he was also the true last Samurai in history and inspired the Ken Watanabe Character of Lord Moritsugu Katsumoto in the movie The Last Samurai and please adopt him and make him lead the next stack. And he is also playable in the historical battles for Fall of the Samurai and given his own model and Portrait but CA choice not to reuse that model in the Campaign gameplay for some reason. 3. Before you turn Republic, make sure the Cadet School is fully upgraded to the Army War College to get access to elite republican guard infantry and order to do that you have trade with the foreign powers as soon as possible or sail a ship around japan to see who has cotton and Light Machine and remember before you turn Republic and that was your mistake in your Obama Campaign and after you turn republic the foreign powers Bug out and you no longer have cotton and Light Machine for republican guard infantry.
@lionheartx109 ай бұрын
Could you just clarify with point 3. What exactly do I need to do to ensure that same bug doesn't occur? Build the army college or claim regions with both the cotton and light machines resource? Or is it that I need both those resources to build an army college first?
@jamesthach25049 ай бұрын
Hello Lionheart, 1. You can only get both Cotton and Light Machines by trading with the foreign powers as soon you hit the third level of your Clan Development tree and there are no settlements on the map with cotton and light machines or a building you need to construct. And all you need is Light Machines to Construct the Army College for Republican Guard Infantry. 2. And I watch your Obama Series and you briefly had both cotton and light machines when you reach the third level of your tech until you turn Republic, Then after that it bug out both the cotton and light machines And you were able to research Modern Army but Barracks was converting in to the Military Academy at Kaga at that turn when you turn Republic and I also watch MrSmartDonkey's Fall of the Samurai turn Republic series, This bug only happen when you turn Republic not when you stay loyal to the Emperor or Shogun. 3. Conquer all of kyushu and destroy the Saga and research Modern Army and begin upgrading that Cadet School to Army War College at your Capital ASAP.
@lionheartx109 ай бұрын
@jamesthach2504 sorry James I'm still unsure of what I need to do to avoid the bug as a republic is it that I need to have already built the Army College BEFORE going republic as I won't be able to after going independent?

Hello again Lionheart, 1. Just try to get through research Modern Army and get that Army War College building done before you turn Republic and that Bug is unavoidable and its also present in MrSmartDonkey's Fall of the Samurai turn Republic series, This bug only happen when you turn Republic not when you stay loyal to the Emperor or Shogun and This bug was never fix what so ever. 2. When you have the time would you please build the British Trading District at the Capital so the Royal Marines will have accuracy & armour and build the Armourer this time so both accuracy & armour is Gold and "Perfectly balanced, as all things should be". 3. You should make Saigō Takamori the new heir sense he will lead the next stack and if something happens to the faction leader and the current heir's level is lower then Takamori, then he will gain Delusions of Grandeur, then start a Rebellion. Just remove Takamori current office by right clicking the picture of a foot then finally declare heir by left clicking the picture of a raising sun. 4.And One more thing, You also got the Resources of Cotton from the foreign powers so you can upgrade your Cottage Industry to Cotton Processing Plant for more funds!

Yeah I think something along the lines of western British tech shows the Satsuma the overwhelming positives to modernising and embrace ING various western ideals and while the Emperor utilises it too he never fully embraces it which lead the Satsuma to feel isolated from their new British Allies, over time this resentment festers and prompted by British ear whispering of power, wealth and emerging as a new player on the global stage. The Satsuma will in time turn against their Emperor.

HOW ARE YOU PLAYING FALL OF THE SAMURAI, IT WONT WORK ON SHOGUN 2? AND I DO NOT HAVE ANY OTHER WAY TO ACCESS IT, I SEE THERES A SAGA BUT I BOUGHT ALL THE DLC BACK IN 2012 WHY THE HECK CAN'T I PLAY THIS GAME?
@lionheartx109 ай бұрын
Not sure what you mean exactly. I load up shogun 2 and select the fall of the samurai campaign and play.

Warhammer has ruined the word 'emperor' for me. Heard you saying 'Hail the emperor' and immediately said 'for Sigmar!'

when this first came out it took 20 minutes to load into battles even with a i9 and 4080 it takes awhile wonder what causes it i guess i am spoiled by ps5 and m.2
@lionheartx109 ай бұрын
Thankfully the game has always loaded fast for me, CPU and GPU wont effect loading speeds much more to do with SSD type whether SSD or NVME, M.2 won't effect speed as thats just the form factor of the SSD chip itself. But most likely the reason is that back in 2011 when this released we didnt have the fast storage options we do today so the game isnt optimised for faster loading at least no more than it can handle based off of the tech it was built on back in 2011.

everyone but legend who plays this seems to have absolutely no idea what they're doing. second guessing themselves every step of the way.

I wish these players would play with the formations given and not put the units in a straight line 😒.
