Paper wallets are where you record a private key and corresponding bitcoin address as QR codes that are printed onto a piece of paper. They were very popular in the early days of bitcoin, when mnemonic phrases didn't exist. Stop using them. Learn why in this video.

@@xtrctn Ngrave keeps their wallets code open sourced. It has no wifi/bluetooth. It only has the update factor with a usb but that said update goes to a separate part of the wallet that can not speak to the private keys. The wallet also needs an ID via blockchain to tell you that the update is genuine. Cold storage is what we have now.. Ngrave is EAL7 protected while your bank is EAL 5. I think we are good.

The government can't subpoena the bitcoin network and seize your funds. Most hardware wallets have a central point of control being the company that made it, which is obligated to turn over information and possibly keys. Bitcoin was supposed to take that away, so putting your funds on a 3rd party hardware wallet defeats the purpose, imo.

I'm reading the Warranties of Hardware Wallets and they are awful, they simply promise nothing, warrants nothing to the user. Are really hardware so secure? Does it makes sense to buy a product of an enterprise which will not respond if the product or software generate losses?

So paper wallets are obsolete? Ha! Even with a hardware wallet they tell you to make backup copies of your seed phrase/keyword phrase and keep it in a safe place such as on paper (or whatever). The seed phrase allows you to recover your wallet if a hardware wallet or some other device such as you or your phone or computer dies, or gets lost or stolen. Your 'wallet' is BASICALLY THE SAME THING AS A PASSWORD SAFE, one that makes use of encryption, and... 1. Saves your public account addresses (basically the same thing as a user ID) 2. Secret keys (basically the same thing as a password) 3. And your 24 word seed phrase (basically the same thing as a master password). Many wallets only work with a single blockchain related service and some of them support more than one, but no wallet supports all of them. Crazy huh? In other words they still don't have things figured out completely.

When aantop talks about obsolete paper wallets, he's talking about a piece of paper on which a secret key and corresponding address are written, likely in the form of a QR code. A modern software or hardware wallet is a hierarchical deterministic wallet that automatically generates an new SK and address for each transaction, which are derived from the seed phrase. Yes, you still need to write down your seed phrase.

Its a good idea to practice sweeping a paper wallet before sweeping large amounts. Create a paper wallet in the same way you originally did or use spares which you may have created at the time. Send a small amount to it. Sweep it before you sweep your original paper wallet(s).

I am using paper wallets as gifts e.g. now at xmas or new year within a "wish you all the best" cards. It is a lot easier to attach a paper wallet in that card than doing the same with a ledger or so😉. However one of the greatest danger with a paper wallet wasnt mentioned here: When someone wants to spend a little amount of his paper wallet and scans the QR for importing it in a software wallet, sends some of it to the receiver and then - "to be safe" - deletes the software wallet again, all of his paper wallet funds might got lost. Why? Because some wallets put the change into a new address. So your paper wallet address is empty and the change is on a new address where you just deleted all info about it.

or you could use something more secure: a Trezor hardware wallet with passphrase protected hidden wallet(s) put a small amount in your default wallet which is not passphrase protected. put the bulk in your hidden wallet(s) if your seed phrase is compromised they still can't get into your hidden wallet(s) because they don't know the passphrase, which is the final addon word of your standard seed phrase. passphrase is memorized, you don't want to write it down. every day, i recite my passphrase and Trezor pin number in my head.

hey there mr antonopolous, I was wondering - Let's say I was traveling abroad and customs decided to take my hardware wallet. If I happened to have access to my 24 words, would I be able to download or purchase any wallet and just enter those 24 words and it would allow me access to my crypto? Or would I have to also know my public wallet address? I am having a hard time grasping this concept. Have been trying to figure it out the last few hours but cannot seem to come up with an answer.

Yes. With your 24 word seed phrase, you will be able to derive the same series of secret keys and corresponding addresses that original wallet did and access your funds. Note that different brands of hardware and software wallets may take the same seed phrase and derive the SK's and addresses differently, which could result in your funds not showing up when you attempt to access them. Stick with the same brand/app to avoid headaces. If your worried about it memorize your seed phrase and fly without a wallet, hard or soft.

Be careful guys. I did a copy paste of my private key of my wallet on a usb as backup. After 1 month I checked my wallet, and it was empty. A virus in my pc did a copy of all my copy paste key strokes and found my wallet address. Stupid me. But I learned my lesson. Buy a hardware wallet and write your seed down on a paper multiple times. Too bad BIP 32 is pretty much obsolete because of Taproot. :( We now have to track which scripts we should use with each output. So backups with output descriptors will probably become the norm. Users will have to learn how to properly secure encrypted files.

Tbh paper wallets are perfectly fine. I have multi that were generated with a coldcard using high entropy roles for each. Fully airgapped and printed from a non internet connected pc that was then wiped. The printer was then thrown away. Wallets in a safe. What's the big deal.😂

@rodneyd7773 Basically what I described. Coldcard has a paper wallet function under advanced menu. The tutorial is on their website. Easy. Just make sure to use a usb bootable OS or an install you can wipe before reconnecting to the internet. Loggers are an actual threat so never reconnect the PC to the internet again with the same OS of you're paranoid

well said. what do you think about this topic --- self-custody (private key management) is not necessarily for everyone. any truth there? I know this is crypto blasphemy by being a direct contradiction to "not your keys not your crypto" decree, but managing a private key is not at all a beginner-friendly task because you have to adopt a security-first or "op sec" mindset and think of all the possible scenarios where someone might be able to access that 12-word seed based on how or where you are storing it. to me that seems like "advanced user" stuff right there. so in other words, storing most or all of your crypto on coinbase or gemini or across a few different exchanges is a perfectly valid thing to do for someone who wants a "hands off" approach and may not care to own that much crypto to begin with.

I still think they are. Just keep the private key safe. Just like you dont want someone to find your seed phrase. And instruct them to sweep all of it when they get the btc out of storage. The paper wallet is STORAGE and wont give you change so be sure to sweep all of it. I see paper as savings account or VAULT and a hd wallet as bank account

Paper wallets were designed by programmers to be used only by programmers back in the early days when only programmers used bitcoin!!! I don't have a problem with paper wallets personally, BUT only use them IF you are adept at programming your own payment scripts AND have your own full node to broadcast the transactions AND have an adept understanding of all the supported bitcoin wallet varieties and uses (P2, P2W, bech32, segwit, etc). I suspect there has been a lot of bitcoin lost because people had no safe way to ever recover their funds from paper wallets, other than using a public website (which will potentially just steal the funds).

Good day sir! You're the best! I'd like to ask something about passphrases and seed phrases, I know you've talked a lot about it but didn't find this particular answer. You've also talked a lot about it being such an immense small chance that someone could stumble on your seed phrase by accident or brute force maybe. But what if someone stores Bitcoin behind a seedphrase and just 1 other passphrase word (maybe outside of Bip list). And stores this last word simply together with the 24 word seed. Because if otherwise, this person would store the 24 words together anyway. So you're maybe not protected against 5 dollar wrench attack but aren't you this way protected against this miniscule coincidence or possibly brute force attack?

You're protected because I imagine ton's of adresses are being made, used, tried, brute forced every year backed by seed phrases and 99% of the time it are 24 words. So 1 word extra (especially outside bip list) would completely take away the risk of someone/something stumple upon your Bitcoin.

This allows a human to memorize and transcribe a very long number that would be otherwise nearly impossible to handle manually. Adding a word not from the list would not work, as it does not correspond to any number. The last word in a phrase is a checksum, so adding another word to the end probably would not work either.

If you generate the paper wallet using pen and paper, and sign transactions using pen and paper, then sure. But then most likely you'd be using an air-gapped computer with a piece of software you wrote yourself to make the task easier, at which point what you've effectively created is... a hardware wallet. So it's basically just cheaper, smaller, quicker and easier to buy an inexpensive purpose-built hardware wallet.

so, I want to store btc for my kids. At least 20year hold time. In my short experience using a Ledger Nano (annoying as hell) I know if I use a hardware wallet it will be completely obsolete by the time my kids need to access their btc. It's likely there won't even be a computer that the device can be used on. Already everytime I use my Ledger I have to upload a new operating system. Pretty much every single time. why would one 'sweep' a paper wallet, I see paper wallets use case being like cash or off chain IRL transactions between peers.

@@gleetree7052 the whole point of a paper wallet is too never sweep the funds off of it, thus locking what ever amount into that address, as long as there is a block explorer one can verify the amount locked in there. Thus off chain un-traceable transactions IRL peer to peer.

@@gleetree7052 I never said you keep the private keys, if your going to lock it too a paper wallet, the private keys should not kept at all but destroyed so the funds are forever locked to that address, the only thing require is the public key so one can verify the amount locked to that address. It then would function like cash.

@@gleetree7052 granted it would require a trusted issuer for this to work, thats why in my first post I stated "between peers IRL" implying the parties know each other. My intent was only to play devils advocate and give a use case for paper wallets, anyway I have expended enough time on this debate.
