Poem by Justin McGurk, about Club Kildress, whose fundraising efforts raised close half a million pounds toward their new Community Hub project.
"For those who made it happen, by Justin McGurk"
The target for ticket sales was to raise 400
by the time we'd get it, we'd all be scundered
Then Club Kildress was officially born
and our man at the helm filled in all the forms
Grant applications and funding galore
it would take every penny and then some more
1.2 million pounds would have to be found
before the foundations could be laid in the ground
So plans were drawn and the teams put in place
9 months of commitment we'd all have to face our men and women all came together
we knocked on the doors in all kinds of weather
All of it to fund our community hub
A place to play our game, celebrate our culture and even have a bite of grub.
With all sacrifice there comes great reward and many a night by God it was hard
for twenty pounds you could win ten grand
or three for forty and I'll shake your hand
And even on nights when we didn't get a sale their reasons didn't matter because we weren't going to fail,
At one house, I thought their reasons were tribal
but even at that, we came home with a bible
If it's proof you need that God loves a trier,
the next door we knocked we got a £100 buyer.
then the goalposts were shifted and 420 thousand was our new aim
to cover all costs, and success was ours to claim
One week to go, would there be enough time?
but all over the world, they were buying their tickets online
we then hit 430 with a few days to go
the momentum we'd found wasn't ready to slow
Our sellers kept going to 450 thousand, then more
we thought that the barrel wouldn't fit through the door
Then 30,000 tickets, in 14 Carrier bags all sat on the floor
were poured into the barrel till it could hold no more
On that evening of the draw, we just could not believe
the extraordinary total that we had achieved
To all those nay-sayers who told us that it could not be done
the people of Kildress Wolfe Tones can say 'As a man or woman thinketh so shall it become'
The success we have achieved, could not be imagined
but by all accounts, it is the stuff of legend
To all who made it happen, they must be celebrated
for their belief in our club and the team spirit they generated
like the words of the song 'Simply The Best',
we are all proud to be Club Kildress.
And when the money was all counted
and the time to spin the barrel had come
CLUB KILDRESS raised Four Hundred and Seventy-One
Thousand Pounds One Hundred and Fifty-one. £474,151.
