Isaiah 9:6 is a prophecy about a future child who would bear the government on his shoulders and be called by titles that could only rightfully be attributed to God:
"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,

The Jewish scholars who interpreted the old testament Hebrew to the Greek when creating The Septuagint bible 200 years before Jesus was born translated that word virgin not maiden interestingly Isa. 7:14. I've read years ago that Isa. 7:14 is a double prophecy its two fold part pertained to Isaiah's predicament and the greater meaning was messianic. Zech 12:10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit[a] of grace and supplication. They will look on[b] me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. Isaiah 53:5 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 9:6 isn’t even quoted in the New Testament. Later Christians claimed this talked about Jesus. According to Judaism, the answer is in the names chosen. The name ‘Hezekiah’ which in Hebrew is ‘Chizkiyah’ comes from the words ‘chazak’ and ‘Ya.’ ‘Chazak’ means ‘strong’ or ‘mighty’ and ‘Ya’ is the shortened name for Gd used as a suffix. Many might recognize the Ya’ in the word, ‘halleluyah’ which means,’praise Gd.’ Judaism believes that Isaiah 9:6-7 refers to Hezekiah, who reigned for almost 30 years. The name Hezekiah, Chizkiyah, is the same name in meaning, as one finds in the verses from Isaiah 9:6-7, a ‘Mighty Gd.’ Christians are fond of using Isaiah 9:6 as a “proof text” for the messiahship and deity of Jesus. Context is important to reading scripture, especially prophecy. What is the book of Isaiah, of whom does the prophet speak in it’s chapters? Isa 1:1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Isa 1:2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD hath spoken: Only one person in the jewish scriptures is referred to as “mighty god” and his name is Hizkiyyahu or, Hezekiah (mighty god) Hezekiah - Hizkiyyahu or Hizkiyyah - Among Hezekiah’s first acts was the repair of the Temple, which had been closed during the reign of Ahaz. He reorganized the services of the priests and Levites, purged the Temple and its vessels, and opened it with imposing sacrifices (2 Chronicles 29:3-36). He resolved to abolish what the Hebrew Bible refers to as idolatry from his kingdom, and among other things that he did to this end, he destroyed the high places (or bamot) and “bronze serpent” (or “Nehushtan”), recorded as being made by Moses according to the command of God (Numbers 21:8), which became an object of idolatrous worship. In place of this, he centralized the worship of God at the Jerusalem Temple. Hezekiah also resumed the Passover pilgrimage and the tradition of inviting the scattered tribes of Israel to take part in a Passover festival. He also sent messengers to Ephraim and Manasseh inviting them to Jerusalem for the celebration of the Passover. The messengers, however, were not only not listened to, but were even laughed at; only a few men of Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun came to Jerusalem. Nevertheless the Passover was celebrated with great solemnity and such rejoicing as had not been in Jerusalem since the days of Solomon. Hezekiah is portrayed by the Hebrew Bible as a great and good king. He is one of the few kings praised so highly as to have “trusted in the Lord the God of Israel; so that there was no one like him among all the kings of Judah after him, or among those who were before him” (2 Kings 18:5). The Talmud (Bava Batra 15a) credits Hezekiah with overseeing the compilation of the biblical books of Isaiah, Proverbs, Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes. According to Jewish tradition, the victory over the Assyrians and Hezekiah’s return to health happened at the same time, the first night of Passover. Hezekiah’s “success” is mitigated just a verse later: “In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them” (2 Kgs 18:13). Hezekiah then apologizes to the Assyrian king and agrees to pay whatever tribute is imposed, including “silver” and “gold” from “the temple of the Lord” (2 Kgs 18:14-15). In addition, both Hezekiah himself (2 Kgs 19:4) and Isaiah (2 Kgs 19:30-31) refer to “the surviving remnant of the house of Judah.” Although the storyline in 2 Kings precedes the miraculous rescue of Jerusalem in center stage (2 Kgs 18:17-19:37), 2 Kgs 18:13-16 are important verses that might go overlooked. But other passages elsewhere in the Bible, namely Micah’s lament for these destroyed cities of Judah, make sure that the readers of the Bible do not forget those outlying towns that were not as fortunate as the capital city of Jerusalem (Mic 1:1-16). Sennacherib’s Prism claims that he had taken captive “200,150 people” and had “diminished his land.” And the wall relief of the siege of Lachish in Sennacherib’s palace in Nineveh graphically illustrates the cruel terror with which the Assyrians repay their rebels, as does the archaeology of Lachish itself. When did Jesus ever run any government? When was Jesus ever called a Wonderful Counselor, or a Mighty Gd, or an Everlasting Father, or a Prince of Peace? Jesus was never called by any of these names anywhere in the Christians’ New Testament and not at all in his own lifetime. Christians always seem to misunderstand this quotation. This is because they do not understand Hebrew, nor do they understand names, nor do they understand Hebrew names. First, let us understand names. In most languages, every name has a meaning. The name ‘Anthony’ means ‘priceless’ and the name ‘Alexander’ means ‘protector.’ If we were to give a child the first and middle names of Anthony Alexander, would that mean that we are saying that this child is a ‘priceless protector?’ Would we call out to them, ‘Hey, Priceless Protector, how are you?’ Of course not. Hebrew names sometimes say something about Gd. The name Michael means ‘who is like Gd.’ The name Elihu means ‘my Gd is He,’ or ‘He is my Gd.’ The name Immanuel means ‘Gd is with us,’ just to give a few examples. If someone has the name, Elihu, (again, meaning ‘He is my Gd’) would that mean that the human being known as Elihu is Gd? These names say something about Gd, even though they are the names of ordinary human beings. A better translation to the verse in question might be: …and his name will be called, ‘A wonderful counselor is the mighty Gd, an everlasting father is the ruler of peace.’ This means that there are really only two Hebrew names in the verse, which are given to a human being and not to a divine being, even though the names make a statement about Gd. Those names, like Anthony Alexander in our example above, would be ‘Pele Yoetz El Gibor Avi Ad Sar Shalom.’ The way it is written in the original Hebrew, the names would be hyphenated as ‘Pele-Yoetz-El-Gibor’ and ‘Avi-Ad-Sar-Shalom.’ Lengthy names like these were not uncommon in the Bible, and in Isaiah specifically. For example, in Isaiah 8:3, we find the name, ‘Maher-shalal-chash-baz,’ which means ‘the spoil speeds, the prey hastens.’ But let us suppose that this verse really did contain four names. How well would they apply to Jesus? Is this a case where at first the description of the person described in Isaiah 9:6-7 sounds like the story of Jesus, but, on closer examination, it isn’t? In the trinity, Jesus is the son, and not the Father. He cannot be both at the same time. As a matter of fact, Jesus himself showed that he was not the Father, and claimed not to have the same will, or the same knowledge as the Father. And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.’ [Matthew 26:39] Jesus calls the One to whom he prayed his Father, so how can Jesus be ‘the Everlasting Father,’ if he called another his Father? How could Jesus be the Father if the will of Jesus is not the same as the will of the Father? This denies the very idea of the trinity. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. [Mark 13:32] In the above verse, Jesus claims there is something that he does not know, but that only the Father knows. So how can Jesus, ‘the son,’ also be the Father if their knowledge is not the same? Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my Gd, and your Gd. [John 20:17] How can the Father ascend to Himself? In the above verse, Jesus not only distinguishes between himself and his Father, but he also makes it sound as though the relationship that he has with Gd, ‘The Father,’ is exactly the same relationship that all people have with Gd, who is, in fact, the Father of all.

Below is a quote in both English and Hebrew from the Hebrew bible regarding Isaiah 9:6 in the KJV, which is actually Isaiah 9:5 in the Hebrew bible. Equally important, Isaiah is referring to a child that has already been born, (Past Tense). The Hebrew word ''יֻלַּד'' (Yulad) means ''was born'' (Past Tense) which shows this quite clearly and this word is used in other parts of the Hebrew bible to mean exactly that. See the following: Genesis 4:26, Genesis 35:26, Judges 18:29, Jeremiah 20:15, Psalms 87:5, Ruth 4:16-17 Also, the word ''וַיִּקְרָ֨א'' (Vayikra) means ''was called, or cried''. The word is used to refer to something that has already been named, Past Tense. See the following examples: Genesis 1:5, Genesis 3:20, Genesis 25:26, Isaiah 21:8, Isaiah 36:13 The New Testament tries to imply that the child mentioned in the verse is ''baby Jesus'', and is called ''Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.'', when in actual fact, the child is only called "the prince of peace" by the wondrous adviser, the mighty God, the everlasting Father. Just to clarify what the Hebrew bible actually says, the child being spoken about is not ''the wondrous adviser, the mighty God, the everlasting Father'', he is just "the prince of peace". In any case, even if the Christian translation of the verse were accurate, and that was the child's Divine name, it does not mean that the child is in fact G-d. There are quite a few examples in the Hebrew bible of people or things that are given Divine names but are obviously not G-d. See: Genesis 33:20, Exodus 17:15, Judges 6:24, Jeremiah 33:16, 1 Samuel 1:1, 1 Samuel 1:3, Judges 9:5, Exodus 21:6, Exodus 7:1. One has to read the whole of Isaiah chapter 9 in the correct context to understand it. So, who is the child (the prince of peace) that Isaiah is speaking about in chapter 9? Answer: King Hezekiah of Judah. He is the one who brings peace to the Jewish people with the miraculous help of G-d, (as of the day of Midian - Isaiah 9:3 & see 2 Kings 19:31-35 in Hebrew bible) by defeating the Assyrians who were threatening to destroy the kingdom of Judah.(the Jewish people) In conclusion, Isaiah chapter 9 is describing the miraculous victory of King Hezekiah and the Jewish people over the powerful Kingdom of Assyria at that time, similar to the miraculous victory of Gideon over the Midianites, alluded to in Isaiah 9:3 in the Hebrew bible. It is not speaking about a future event (Birth of Jesus)700 years later, it describes these events in the Past Tense. One does not speak about a future event in the Past Tense!

And how does this explains the verses of Isaiah 9:1-2 when it talks about a great light shine on the land of Zebulun and Naphtali which was part of the Kingdom of Israel. The Kingdom of Israel has been conquered by the Assyrian Empire during the time of Hezekiah. Hezekiah didn't do everything to the land of Zebulun and Naphtali according to the scriptures. If any, it was God who killed the 185000 Assyrian soldiers saving the Kingdom of Judah. However, according to the New Testament, Jesus was raised up and starts his missionary at Galilee which is a city in between the land of Zebulun and Naphtali.

​1) he quoted correctly the verse that starts with "For a child IS born to us",meaning the child had already been born during Isaiah time which is 700 years before Jesus. in the verse, the Hebrew word "YULAD" is past perfect tense meaning was born or is now born. however many mainstream christian translation say: "For a child will be born to us". that is a mis translation aiming to manipulate the text to fit the Jesus narrative. 2) "and he will be given the name" - again mistranslation. the Hebrew words "VA-YIKRA SHEMO" is past perfect or present tense meaning is/was called. if you dont believe me go to Leviticus Chapter 1:1 look how the first word in the verse -VA-YIKRA (וַיִּקְרָ֖א). you will see it is translated in the christian bible in the past tense which is a correct translation, while in Isaiah 9:5 they changed the same word to the future tense. 3) Isaiah is talking about the great miracle of the destruction of the Assyrian army during Hezekiah, the king reigning during Isaiah time. the name Hezekiah contains two Hebrew words. first word "HAZAK" means Mighty second word "YAHO" means god. Hezekiah is called "Wonder of a Counsellor" because he counselled the Jewish people in Jerusalem, persuading them to repent for their sins and put their trust in god. and because they did as he counselled them, 185,000 of Assyrian soldiers surrounding Jerusalem were wiped out (II Chronicles 31 and 32). Hezekiah is called "the everlasting Father" because this name is a sign, which foretells that God will add years to his life and also because the Davidic dynasty was once more confirmed as the only true kingly rule that God would accept over his people (Isaiah 38:5). Hezekiah is called "the ruler of peace" because this name is a sign, which foretells that God would be merciful to him. Punishment for lack of faith in the Almighty will be deferred and peace granted during the last years of his rule (Isaiah 39:8; 2 Chronicles 32:23). 4) "dominion will rest on his shoulders" - the original Hebrew is in the present tense " VA-TEHI" (is upon): "and the government is upon his shoulder" again, Isaiah speak about someone living in his time. in any case, Jesus died as a criminal under roman government. Hezekiah held the government of Judea on his shoulders. 5) "in order to extend the dominion" - again mistranslation. the Hebrew word "MISRA" translate to "government" not dominion, a specifically Political role. Jesus was never a politician, Hezekiah was. 6) "and perpetuate the peace of the throne and kingdom of David" - Jesus or his church never perpetuate peace. Hezekiah on the other hand did - "peace reigned for the rest of his life" (2 Chronicles 32:23) 7) "to secure it (the kingdom of David) and sustain it through justice and righteousness henceforth and forever". did Jesus do that? absolutely not. things only went down hill for Judea since before the time of Jesus and after him. Hezekiah on the other hand cleansed the temple and his kingdom from idolatry and he is considered the most righteous Jewish king that ever lived. 8) The zeal of Adonai - Tzva’ot will accomplish this. The author is saying that the things a young couple might face in life are mysterious, something that can't be predicted. So this ALMAH is a married woman! She just happens to be young.

The word "ALMAH" עלמה comes from "Alum" עלום, which means "youth, youthful vigour". Also, ALMAH is female of ALEM, עלם and we see in scripture, King Shaul referring to David as "Alem" on 1 Samuel 17:56. It is also written that David had killed a lion and a bear, a child could not have done that. Well, you believe that Mary is the "young woman" of the prophecy, right? I guess you don't believe that Mary was a underage girl.

The text only means to say that just like these four things are unpredictable, also the way of the adulteress woman in unpredictable. Btw, adultery can only happen when a woman is married (in biblical times, a man could have more than a wife). So even if you consider that the adulteress woman is this "ALMAH", you still have to admit she's married!!! Well coming up with a modern dictionary to explain ancient hebrew scriptures is pretty anachronistic. Almah comes from Alum (youth). The main goal of usage of the word is to refer to someone who's young, not someone who's virgin (even though it might be a virgin, it's not what the word is focusing on).

Unto us a child is born" is a reference to king Hezekiah. It is not about Jesus. There is nothing evidently futuristic in Isaiah 9:6, and the verses are past tense (admittedly, a past tense does not rule out a future event, but to supply future tenses in a translated text, there should be evidence that a future is intended by the Hebrew writer). The child has already been born at the time of Isaiah's writing. King Hezekiah is described as one of the greatest kings that Judah ever had (2 Kings 18:5) because of his trust in the LORD. He is the harbinger of the light to the Gentiles and the Galileans who were being persecuted by the Assyrians (led by king Sargon). Hezekiah withstood their vast armies by virtue of his faith, despite being hugely outnumbered. The light (verse 2) is the light of God that he reflected on them through his faith and zeal. At any rate, turning to the epithets or descriptors in Isaiah 9:6, we find that NONE of them applies to Jesus, and the NT never indicates that they do. For example, Jesus was not called "everlasting Father". In Christian theology, Jesus is never the "Father", but the Son; calling Jesus "Father" would contradict the Trinity (If God intended any indication of Jesus in the verse, it would surely read "everlasting Son"). Jesus was also not called "prince of peace" either. On the contrary, in Matt. 10:32, he declares that he had not come to bring peace, but a sword. Jesus wasn't called by any of the other epithets in that verse, so they are a mismatch for him. The Hebrew word "Hezekiah" means "God is mighty" or "might of God". So Hezekiah's name is actually encoded in the verse ("his name is called mighty god"). In the verse Heszekaiah is "everlasting father" in the sense that his dynasty - which is the dynasty of David, his forefather - is everlasting. The verse is not saying that the man Hezekiah is everlasting, but that he is father of an everlasting dynasty - the dynasty of David.

By the time this child will know to differentiate between good and evil (I imagine before the child comes of age), these two kings (who are at the verge of attacking you, will be abandoned (Isaiah 7:16). It is clearly not speaking about an event that takes place 600 or 700 years later. That has no relevance to the whole chapter. Isaiah 9 incidentally speaks about a Messianic figure (the forefathers of the Messiah are called Messianic figures) it is speaking about the most righteous king known to Judah, Hezekiah. The translation of the KJV is as follows: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." The correct translation from Hebrew will be: "For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us, and the dominion will rest on his shoulders; The Wondrous Adviser (G-d Himself), Mighty G-d (couldn' be clearer) Eternal Father, called his name Prince of Peace" So the KJV corrupted the translation. They say He "will" call his name etc, but the Hebrew is in the past tense. So it couldn't be speaking about Jesus.

For once, the KJV provides us an accurate translation fronm the Hebrew: Isaiah 9:1 (KJV): "Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, As when at first He lightly esteemed The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward more heavily oppressed her, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, In Galilee of the Gentiles." The NIV MISTRANSLATES this verse as a futuristic prophecy: "Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan- in Galilee of the Gentiles." In Matt. 13: 14-15 God the Son quoted these words to the Jews who rejected him. And now God the Spirit, through the apostle, repeated them to the people who had a hardened heart. Alma is not ambiguous at all! It means young woman. Certainly not virgin. Virgin is always Besulah in Hebrew. Turn to Proverbs 30:20: "This is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, 'I've done nothing wrong.'" The word for young woman is alma over here. An adulterous young woman. Hardly a virgin. You are not honest (or mislead) if you say alma is ambiguous.

In the original Hebrew text! Isaiah did not use the word "virgin", but rather "young woman". In the Greek Bible that the New Testament authors were using, it was mistranslated as "virgin". 100% human error.

So the septuagint is not more accurate with respect to Isaiah 7:14. The DSS Isaiah scroll is designed "1QIsa" if you want to look it up. Also, the Septuagint does not predate the masoretic text by thousands of years. The oldest known masoretic text is the Aleppo codex from around the year 930. For a greek translation to predate that by thousands of years it would at least have to date to around 1070BC, which is just absurd. The original LXX (which was ONLY five books of Moses and did not include Isaiah) wasn't even translated until the around the second century BC. All we have are a few tiny greek fragments that predate the first century, none of which contain Isaiah.

When did Jesus ever run any government? When was Jesus ever called a Wonderful Counselor, or a Mighty Gd, or an Everlasting Father, or a Prince of Peace? Jesus was never called by any of these names anywhere in the Christians’ New Testament and not at all in his own lifetime. Christians always seem to misunderstand this quotation. This is because they do not understand Hebrew, nor do they understand names, nor do they understand Hebrew names. First, let us understand names. In most languages, every name has a meaning. The name ‘Anthony’ means ‘priceless’ and the name ‘Alexander’ means ‘protector.’ If we were to give a child the first and middle names of Anthony Alexander, would that mean that we are saying that this child is a ‘priceless protector?’ Would we call out to them, ‘Hey, Priceless Protector, how are you?’ Of course not. Hebrew names sometimes say something about Gd. The name Michael means ‘who is like Gd.’ The name Elihu means ‘my Gd is He,’ or ‘He is my Gd.’ The name Immanuel means ‘Gd is with us,’ just to give a few examples. If someone has the name, Elihu, (again, meaning ‘He is my Gd’) would that mean that the human being known as Elihu is Gd? These names say something about Gd, even though they are the names of ordinary human beings. A better translation to the verse in question might be: …and his name will be called, ‘A wonderful counselor is the mighty Gd, an everlasting father is the ruler of peace.’ This means that there are really only two Hebrew names in the verse, which are given to a human being and not to a divine being, even though the names make a statement about Gd. Those names, like Anthony Alexander in our example above, would be ‘Pele Yoetz El Gibor Avi Ad Sar Shalom.’ The way it is written in the original Hebrew, the names would be hyphenated as ‘Pele-Yoetz-El-Gibor’ and ‘Avi-Ad-Sar-Shalom.’ Lengthy names like these were not uncommon in the Bible, and in Isaiah specifically. For example, in Isaiah 8:3, we find the name, ‘Maher-shalal-chash-baz,’ which means ‘the spoil speeds, the prey hastens.’ But let us suppose that this verse really did contain four names. How well would they apply to Jesus? Is this a case where at first the description of the person described in Isaiah 9:6-7 sounds like the story of Jesus, but, on closer examination, it isn’t? In the trinity, Jesus is the son, and not the Father. He cannot be both at the same time. As a matter of fact, Jesus himself showed that he was not the Father, and claimed not to have the same will, or the same knowledge as the Father. And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.’ [Matthew 26:39] Jesus calls the One to whom he prayed his Father, so how can Jesus be ‘the Everlasting Father,’ if he called another his Father? How could Jesus be the Father if the will of Jesus is not the same as the will of the Father? This denies the very idea of the trinity. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. [Mark 13:32] In the above verse, Jesus claims there is something that he does not know, but that only the Father knows. So how can Jesus, ‘the son,’ also be the Father if their knowledge is not the same? Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my Gd, and your Gd. [John 20:17] How can the Father ascend to Himself? In the above verse, Jesus not only distinguishes between himself and his Father, but he also makes it sound as though the relationship that he has with Gd, ‘The Father,’ is exactly the same relationship that all people have with Gd, who is, in fact, the Father of all.
