Weird, I use it periodically and it does pretty well--just avoid the planet where orbitals are spread out, and get the ship mod "More Guns". Walking Barrage is better but the 380MM and 120MM can wreck an area. Guess it's in how you use it.

To be fair, a modern JDAM is 21k-36k for the conversion kit alone, i.e. not the bomb itself. And the cost to drop the bomb includes the logistical, operational, and maintenance cost to send out the plane itself. So frankly, it's not that far off from modern standards. There's a line from one of the NPCs that says a strategem costs more than what a citizen makes in a year. Take the FAF-14 Spear, essentially a futuristic FGM-148 Javelin. A Javelin costs ~$175k...which is indeed a bit above what most people make.

If it's just a dumb bomb, probably not much. The cheapest bombs in modern wars are also the biggest, because they're just old dumb bombs with some glidefins attached. Turns them into a gravity-driven missile when launched from air.

@@335449286That is exactly how it is explosives can be made in mass and cheaply as can the bomb casing, now the guidance systems those cost quite a bit more being anywhere from 5-100 times more expensive then a dumb bomb of similar size depending on how advanced a system they are going for. Of course since this game takes place in the future they might be able to mass produce the guidance systems cheaply and in mass which would solve the cost problem.

Yeah, totally. Yesterday a mate dropped a 500kg bomb 5 meters away from a charger, didn't hurt it a bit. On a different mission I killed a charger by just landing on top of it when respawning. Noice.

@security_kolinskiIt's really inconsistent and I think that cover is the problem. Even the scantest earth birm or rock seems to be enough to give protection against the explosion. It's super effective against Bile Titans because as long as the bomb ends up somewhere under the titan that's good enough, there's no cover to obstruct the explosion, but throw one down into say, a bot outpost and it's a real crapshoot if it damages anything at all. I once had one end up in a trench inside a bot outpost and I don't think it took out anything.

You know... I feel 500KG isn't actually all that much. Couple years ago a WW2 era German bomb was found buried in a construction site in Exeter. The bomb known as 'the Hermann' was 1000kg and had to be detonated on site due to poor condition of the bomb. 400 tonnes of sand were used to absorb the explosion and properties were still damaged around it.

In the future, explosive compounds will have evolved to a point where you get a way higher TNT equivalent than older bombs, walls will also be thinner and lighter allowing for more effective weight to be actual explosive.
