Foraging at the end of August in the Drovers Rest Hereford

Some of the lovely finds we got on our day out at the Drovers Rest at the end of August including the Horn Of Plenty :) Identification by www.wildfooduk.com
Notes: There are actually 5 species of milkcap found in the UK that have orange milk and all are edible. Some of the ones not mentioned here are rare though so try to stick to the common species.
There are also many contenders for most poisonous mushroom in the UK though there is no conclusive proof. The Death Cap and Destroying Angel are certainly attributed with the most deaths in the UK, Europe and possibly globally though.

I used to work at an empty country house which had extensive grounds. A gardener was employed there, and he knew all the edible mushrooms, and showed me where to find them - except for the Chanterelles, which he sold to a local gastropub. He did give me some, quite often, though, and I enjoyed them immensely. I often found Horn Of Plenty Mushrooms, and often had them on toast for my lunch. The gardener once presented me with a giant Puffball, which I took home for my parents (after cutting a bit off for my lunch), and dad hollowed it out, stuffed it with various things including bacon, and cooked it. Food of the gods.

Haha, we have so many black trumpets here near stockholm - but yes.. they can be hard to spot and it took a few years to find places - but we go back and there is usually some year after year. Were a bit torn over whether they like hazel or not, they like a bit of a slope facing east or the hazel and slope are just coincidences.

It was a bright day which made it difficult to see any definition on white mushrooms. When it is bright like this maybe shade the subject from direct sun when filming if possible.

Lactifluus vellereus/Fleecy Milkcap is 100% edible if you like bitter/peppery hot food/mushrooms. Been eating this along with Lactarius piperatus and all other similar safe to eat milkcaps... Greetings from Bulgaria!

I like to put it this way, you distinguish the Amanitas from Milk caps by the lack of milk, and from the Russulas by the Amanitas' stringy flesh.

You should still use your old iPhone camera Marlow, rather than whatever you're using now, which is inferior and overexposes, so that we're unable to see properly the identification of the mushrooms.

Yes there is a variety called creeping wood sorrel. That one is much higher in oxalic acid though and should generally be avoided except in very small quantities.

Quick question about the wood sorrell (im still learning) haha. I have a load of clover looking plants where i live not in woods but all over the grass. Are they all safe to forage? Alot of them have white stripes on them. If you have the time I would love to hear back. Thankyou for these videos.

The safron milk cap is the only mushroom that i gave myself a panic attack thinking i had missidentified it. To me it had a slightly gritty texture though. It wasnt one that agreed with even me before i started googling toxic lookalikes after i had consumed it lol. I have it in good authoritity that they pickle realy well though

I know fly agaric is not supposed to be edible (also know that people use them to 'trip' with the psychoactive properties it contains) but I've seen in a few videos that you can boil the mushroom to remove the toxins in which it also removes the psychoactive properties (apparently you boil the mushroom 3 times, the last time you add vinegar and ginger to remove the last of the toxins although I could be wrong quoting that and then apparently you fry it to finish off the process) what's your opinion on this ?

if mushrooms have slight toxins that give bad stomachs is it lessened with cooking? ie is it always better to cook mushrooms that have been foraged? do you get less nutrients by cooking?

I'd cook all wild mushrooms. Some like morels have toxins that can be cooked out but not all of them.

Yes the Lilac fibrecap which is common and poisonous, but it doesn't have the purple gills so always check those on every amethyst you pick as they can grow in close proximity.
