I have greenbriers all around my house. Constantly pulling them up, even tried digging the root, which is impossible! but never knew I could eat them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nice to you again! How did you come to learn so much about wild edible and medicinal plants?

I've been learning a little at a time for a long time. What really got me into plant identification was the plant identification courses at college. Once I learned that most plants can be definitively identified if you know what to look for I really started to learn more and more plants.

Awesome. Do you use herbs often in ur daily life? What are your favorite medicinals? Also is black cohosh common in New England?

@@billjim334 My foraging tends to be just eating things as I'm walking 90% of the time, a little here a little there. I don't usually go out of my way to get a medicinal for a specific purpose, the exception is if I feel a cold or something coming on I might make a pine needle tea or something like that. I also will chew antibiotic plants like garlic for toothaches or make a salve by chewing on plants and apply them to minor cuts to prevent infection. The problem I've noticed with trying to find powerfull medicinals is that the really powerful ones often come with higher risks. The exception being something like cannabis which has pretty low risks considering how powerful it is. I also believe there are some psilocybe mushroom that have some really powerful effects with a low risk for bad side effects but I haven't really gotten into any of that. sorry for the disappointing answer. lol I don't tend to see black cohosh where I am in southern, CT I checked the usda map for Actaea racemosa and It's a little spotty if you zoom in right to my area so there may not be a lot around.

Do you know anything about wineberry leaves? Rubus subgenus Idaeobatus. I didn't find anything about anyone using the leaves for food or medicine like blackberry.

the way subgenuses are referred to in taxonomy makes it difficult to search for anything specifically about the subgenus. the subgenus Idaeobatus contains about 60 individual species. So to find out any information on these species you'd have to look them up one by one. a site i use a lot is www.pfaf.org

I'm kinda untraditional as far as my plant Identificaiton goes. I have a completely different method of identification that the traditional ones. Instead of looking for specific wild edibles That I've seen in a book. I tend to focus on general plant identification of all plants that I see commonly(many of these end up being wild edibles). I started by walking out the front door and looking around until I found something I didn't know. the best method I've found today is to join a plant Identification group on facebook. You can just post pictures, most of the time you'll get a correct response or at least a genus or even the wrong plant but then you can google it's look a likes. Then google what you think it is until your 100% sure that your correct. the next step I take is to look up the scientific name on www.pfaf.org which is a database of edibility, hazards, and medicinal uses. you can use another database but that one is very thorough. then also google edibility and stuff like that until you know the plant inside and out. Then move to another plant. If you're just looking for a good book to read in your spare time there are a lot, just make sure it's focus on your area and the type of information that you're looking for.
